Royal Courts of Justice - Coconut

After weeks of preparing their trail, Coconut class finally went to Royal Courts of Justice to perform their mock trial.

With around 90 courtrooms, the Royal Courts of Justice deals mainly in appeal cases and constructed 120 years ago.

After arriving in our courtroom, the children were able dress up as the characters from the courtroom.

We had a judge...

 A clerk and an usher...

We had barristers and witnesses.

Not forgetting those important people who decide the fate of the defendant, the jury.

After performing their impressive trial, the class got to speak to a Judge's clerk and ask her questions about the careers in the courts, as well as her sharing with the class stories about some of the trials she's been involved with, including Apple vs Samsung.

The trip was topped off with a visit to the costume department, with some if the outfits worn by the members of the courts on display! Can you spot the outfit embroidered with 24 carat gold?!

We then saw this unusual sculpture of Cheif Lord Justice (2000-2005) Harry Woolf, can you tell which everyday household item it is made from?

Broadford University: Terrific Textiles

The children of Miss R's Terrific Textiles are currently busy pinning their pattern to their fabric. Later they will cut out their fabric and start to sew it together. With not much longer to go, there is lots of sewing to do!

Year 6 - Coconut - Art/DT

The children looked at many different Tudor houses and the features they have such as beams and the shape of the windows and doors. They then went on to make their own 3D Tudor houses. They used a net of the 3D shapes needed for the main body of their house such as a cube or a cuboid and repeated the process for their roof, choosing either a rectangular prism or a square based pyramid. The children had a variety of art resources available to choose from to add the features, thinking about the effects they could create for the roof tiles or the shutters for example. They worked well as a class and showed reciprocity and resilience.

Reece and Charly's magnetised chandelier

In Breakfast club this morning, Reece and Charly from Elm class experimented with magnets and attempted to create a hanging chandelier. The boys were able to demonstrate how attraction and repelling work by removing magnets from the structure. Great work boys!

Miss R's Play Your Cards Right

Nice to see you, to see you...Nice! Year 5 have been incredibly busy putting a week's worth of decimal mathematics to the test to play Miss R's Play Your Cards Right. Ordering decimal fractions from lowest to highest, Year 5 had to take not only tenths and hundredths but also thousandths into consideration to order decimals with up to 3 decimal places. Unfortunately the budget wouldn't quite stretch to a round the world trip as a reward, however a few house points were acquired along the way. Great job Year 5!

An impressive learning challenge!

This morning Katherine Barrett presented Miss Chau with her impeccable learning challenge from the last half term. Katherine has carefully studied the poem, song, painting and famous person and worked on her basic, advanced and deep learning. Miss Chau was blown away by Katherine's hard work, diligence and handwriting. Well done Katherine!

Year 5 spellings week 7

Here are the spellings for this week. The spelling test will be on Friday as normal. Please encourage your child to look up definitions of the words as some are trickier than expected. A reminder that children are expected to bring in their spelling book and reading record to school every Friday.

Royal Courts of Justice - Theatre of Law

Palm were excited to be visiting the Royal Courts of Justice today. Firstly we were met by Evie, who is the Learning Manager at the NCCL, we were then taken to courtroom 25. We discussed the different types of courts and trials which take place at the Royal Courts of Justice.

In our Literacy lessons we wrote our own Crown Court Mock Trial based on a robbery case. The children had the most amazing experience of acting out their case In a real life courtroom inside the Royal Courts of Justice.

Afterwards we met a guest speaker Alison who told us about her job and responsibilities as a Judges Clerk. We were shown ceremonial robes and a replica gold chain which Judges wear on the first day of the Law year, 1st October.

Lastly we visited the Costume Exhibiton of the Royal Courts of Justice.
