Year 5 Orienteering

Year 5 are having a fun (and muddy) time at Langdon Hills. We have learnt how to navigate with a compass and have had to journey through woodland and hills to find the markers!

Year 5 set off

And they're off! Year 5 are off on their trip to Langdon Hills to take part in their Orienteering experience. Keep your eyes peeled for more photos later on!

Year 5 Parents Reminder

To the parents of Year 5 children, please ensure your child is in school by 8.30. Our coach to Langdon Hills will be departing at 8.45. Each child should be ready with their wellies (though if they want to change into these when they get to school then that's fine), their packed lunch in a carrier bag labeled with their name, a spare change of warm clothing and hats, gloves, scarves etc.
Please note children do not have to wear their school uniform today, but please make sure they are suitably warm for today's forecast of dry but cold weather. They should also wear clothes that won't be a problem if they become dirty or muddy. It is advisable to give your child some spare carrier bags to put their muddy wellies/clothes into.
Thankyou for your support. Please keep your eye on our blog, where we will post pictures of the children's orienteering experience throughout the day.

Y5 Langdon Hills Trip: Reminder

Parents of Year 5 children, please see the attached letter detailing items that children will require tomorrow.

Tudors

Tudors in year 6, some children have had the opportunity to go with Miss Munday to research information and facts about Henry viii and he's daughter Elizabeth 1. Armed with research the children we eager to create a fact file poster to demonstrate all the fascinating facts they found out!

Did you know many people blackened their teeth in Tudor times? Sugar was an expensive luxury, the people also knew sugar made your teeth black, therefore they blackened their teeth make people think they were wealthy enough to afford sugar!

Year 5 spellings week 4

Here are the spellings for this week. The spelling test will be on Friday as normal. Please encourage your child to look up definitions of the words as some are trickier than expected. A reminder that children are expected to bring in their spelling book and reading record to school every Friday.

Elm Star Writer

For our last biography big write, our star writer is Razvan Gabreanu. Razvan  included biographical openers, chronology and topical vocabulary. Well done Razvan!

Y5 ordering fractions with different denominators

This morning, children in Miss Chau's Maths set were put into groups and given a bean bag and hula hoop. The aim was to throw the bean bag into the hoop but each child was allowed a different amount of attempts. Children had to record the results as a fraction and then order the fractions from least to greatest. Because of the varying amounts of attempts, the fractions all had different denominators and so the children had to find the lowest common denominator before they were able to order the fractions. Great work year 5!

What if not...?

We have been reading a fictional story called "Gone Away" in Literacy. The story is told from the viewpoint a boy who has started hanging around wih a new friend as his best friend has "Gone Away". The story is explored through flashbacks with comparisons of time spent with the old and new friend and their differences in nature; the first being selfish and manipulative and the latter open and fun. We were surprised, at the end of the story, to discover that the old friend had not moved away but died in an accident.

We then explored, through role play, the alternative ending to the story, thinking about: What if not dead? What if the best friend had moved away? The children considered how the narrator would react when meeting up with his best friend after a period of time. Would he fall back in line with his manipulation? Or would he finally stand up to him? All the pieces were different but in keeping with the characters in the story.

Well done Coconut Class.

Area? Piece of Pie.

This week Coconut Maths group have been learning about area and perimeter.

They have been working in different groups throughout the week.

Here the children are looking at how we can change parallelograms into rectangles to find the area.

A hard working week for all the class as we see Mrs Marchant absorbed with her group in finding the area of composite shapes!

Keep it up Coconut Class! :)

Stopwatch theatre company

This afternoon year 5 and 6 watched a performance called 'Chicken'.
The play was about a group of young teenagers who gave into peer pressure. The consequences were fatal.
After the play we had a workshop, which helped us to be able to say 'no' to pressure!

The Five Kingdoms

Do you know what the main characteristics of the five kingdoms are? In Palm, the children researched the main characteristics of living things in each kingdom. All living things are divided into the five kingdoms which are: Animals (Animalia), Plants (Plantae), Fungi (Fungus), Protoctista (Protista) and Monera (Bacteria)
Classification of Living Things
Carl Linnaeus had a classification system which was Kingdom, Class, Order, Genus and Species. However this classification system has been developed by scientists ( who are called taxonomists) and now uses seven levels of classification. These seven levels are: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. The purpose for the levels of classification is so that each sub level helps to identify a living thing further.
