Year 5- Well done!

Dear Maple and Elm Class,

Wow! What another amazing half term!
We want to say thank you to all of the parents and pupils for your continued support.

It has been fantastic term and all of the children have not only made some excellent progress but also have worked together in a number of workshops and performances, showing excellent team work. We were incredibly proud of all the pupils in the Christmas Carol concert and we were pleased with how many parents, guardians and family members came along to support. We hope you enjoyed it too!

We also want to say a massive thank you for all of the cards, presents and drawings we have received for Christmas. We hope you all have a lovely and relaxing Christmas break.
We look forward to seeing you on the 8th January :)

Stay safe please!
Miss Daly, Miss Breen, Mrs Johnston, Mrs Clements and Mrs Pike.

Year 5- Live with the news!

Today in Literacy, Year 5 were shown the Cadbury’s video from 2013. In the short video, it is dawn in a street. All the houses and cars have all been covered in purple wrapping paper and bows. A young boy rips the paper covering his bedroom window. The other children run out of the houses, running around, tearing paper as they go. Two children crash in to a snowman shaped parcel and Cadbury chocolate bars rain down to the delight of everyone.

Year 5 have been applying their knowledge of newspaper reports and identified their own 5W’s in relation to this advert. They then rehearsed and filmed their own news report about the ‘incident’.
Miss Daly and Miss Breen were very impressed with the partner work. Throughout the rehearsals we saw lots of partners using their reciprocity skills and supporting each other.

Keep up the great 5W’s work Year 5!

Year 5 - East London Muslim Centre Trip

Over the last 3 weeks, year 5 have been very busy learning all about the religion Islam in their RE lessons. We have learnt all about the history and traditions of the Muslim faith. There are over 2.5 million Muslims in the UK and over 1,500 mosques.

Last Monday and Tuesday, both Elm and Maple class pupils visited the East London Muslim Centre and mosque. We were joined by Sharmina, who taught us all about Islam and the features of a mosque.

We learnt that the top of the minaret is always the highest point in mosques. The mosque has a Qubba (dome) in the prayer hall so that the Imam can be heard as his voice echoes around the mosque. All mosques have a wall marked with a 'mihrab', which indicates the direction of Mecca. Muslims should face this direction when praying.

Throughout the unit we have answered reading comprehensions about the Qu'ran and Ramadan, labelled parts of a mosque, designed our own Islamic art and created an information booklet.

Some of the facts that were shared in our independent information booklet task were:

Fayo
"Did you know that during the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during daylight hours?"

Megan
"In Islamic art, calligraphy, geometric and vegetal patterns are used."

Esther
"The Imam is a very important person in a mosque as they lead the prayer."
