NASA Foam Rocket Investigation Part 2
The children worked in teams of 3, one member was a Launch Director, the Launcher and the Range Officer.
Investigation of how the tension of the elastic band affects the distance the foam rocket travels:
The Launcher attached the rocket to the launcher and pulled the string back so that the elastic band was a distance between 10cm and 50cm, the angle remained the same and was measured using a launch quadrant pattern and launched the rocket.
Investigation of how the angle affects the distance the foam rocket travels:
The Launcher attached the rocket to the launcher and pulled back the string until the tail reached the 60cm mark and using angles between 10 and 80 degrees launched the rocket.
The Launch Director recorded the angle and tension and the Range Officer measured the distance the rocket travelled. The teams changed jobs and completed the experiment again and afterward they compared their results.
Results:
After careful control of the launch angles and the stretching of the launch bands the results showed the farthest flights came from launches with an angle of 45 degrees. They also observed that launches of 30 and 60 degrees and launches of 20 and 70 degrees produced similar distances.
The farthest flights ,based on the investigation of tension, came from the rockets where the launch bands were stretched the furthest.
Conclusion:
The launches of the foam rockets were a good demonstration of Newton's third law of motion.
For every force there is a reaction that is equal in size, but opposite in direction. That is to say that, whenever an object pushes another object it gets pushed back in the opposite direction equally hard.
Melisa's magnificent Learning Challenge Project
Melisa Krasniqi of Maple brought her Learning Challenge into school this morning to show Miss Reynolds and it was truly out of this world! Focusing on year 5's space theme, Melisa made a model of our solar system complete with fully functioning light-up Sun! Great job, Melisa! A Learning Challenge certificate is coming your way!

Year 5 Learning Challenge Summer 1
We are delighted to provide you with the Year 5 Learning Challenge for this half of the Summer Term. You will notice that the activities are split into Basic, Advanced and Deep Learning. This is a way for us to look at learning at Broadford, and is designed to ensure that children not only acquire factual knowledge but also gain a further understanding about how their new skills or knowledge can be applied to their own lives or be used to further their cognitive and social development.
The theme of the Learning Challenge for the first half of the Summer term is 'Is our planet dying?'. It is entirely up to the child whether they select the poem, significant person, music or painting, or a combination of all 4. They can also select the activities that they want to attempt, though we would encourage them to deepen their learning as much as possible.

Poem
David Harmer: Our
Tree
Our Tree
It takes so long for a tree to grow
So many years of pushing the sky.
Long branches stretch their arms
Reach out with their wooden fingers.
Years drift by, fall like leaves
From green to yellow then back to green.
Since my Grandad was a boy
And then before his father’s father
There’s been an elm outside our school
Its shadow long across our playground.
Today three men ripped it down.
Chopped it up. It took ten minutes.

NASA Foam Rocket Investigation Part 1
In our last investigation we were making and testing Parachutes. In today's Science session, we looked at how we could improve our investigation ensuring we had valid data.
Afterwards we looked at basic, advanced and deep questions related to the experiment and worked in groups to answer the questions.
Next we started to plan our NASA Foam Rocket investigation. Some groups have decided to investigate how the tension of the elastic band increases the distance the rocket travels and others have chose to investigate how the launch angle increases the distance the rocket travels.
Y5 Drama Workshop
Year 5 are currently being treated to a drama performance from CPA Studios. The performance and workshop, which will last all morning, revolves around the story of Tracy Beaker and the dumping ground. Watch this space for more photos...

Hockey Skills in Palm
This term in Year 6, we have been focusing on our hockey skills and game play in our class PE sessions. We practised receiving the ball, push and reverse stick passes, running and dribbling, tackling and shooting. We discussed the roles in the team and the different positions and territories that those positions would cover. Lastly we had a class match which ended in a draw.
