Year 6 Junior Citizenship Trip

Today, the Year 6 pupils attended the Junior Citizenship experience and met people from the police, the fire brigade, Havering Safer Transport, Transport for London and many others. The pupils were put into groups and visited different scenarios hosted by various agencies on a carousel.

We met the Royal Lifeboat Rescue Service and the man explained to us about the dangers of currents
and tides when in the water. We learned that we should never enter water alone and that if we are struggling, we should try and stay still and shout 'help'.

Representatives from litter enforcement were present today to ensure that pupils were aware of the terrible effects of rubbish on animals. 80% of children in our year group stated that they had seen the effects of litter on local wildlife.

We were very lucky to hear all about how to stay safe while travelling, an important thing to remember as our pupils move up to secondary school. Transport for London brought along a replica tube station so the children could practise safely waiting on a platform and using their zip cards. They also discovered how to stay safe on buses and what to do if they ever see an unattended bag.

It was good to learn that on a train platform, you must stay back from the yellow line. The ideal guideline is your height and a step back! If you fall onto the tracks, you could become paralysed from the high voltage so it is not worth taking the risk.

The teams collected points for behaviour, listening skills and retention of knowledge and all scored at least 87 points out of a possible 90.

Overall, a fantastic trip which allowed our children to learn life skills and to experience real-life situations which may arise in the future.
