Year 6 Trip to Nuclear Races

Year 6 Trip to Nuclear Races

The Year 6 children had an excellent day yesterday at the Nuclear Races site in Brentwood.

Throughout the day, every child demonstrated grit and determination - there were some very challenging obstacles that they faced!
There were lots and lots of smiling faces and laughing.
We saw excellent teamwork that involved encouraging peers to complete obstacles that at first seemed daunting.

Thank you to all the adults who made the day one to remember.

The photos taken on the day have been uploaded to an album on Facebook.
The link to the album is below.

Year 5-Science Week

This week year 5 pupils have had great fun exploring a range of different science experiments.
During this unit, the children used their reciprocity skills to design and conduct various investigations and recorded their observations. They also showed fantastic communication and listening skills when working in small groups on the polystyrene, metals and perfume oil experiments.

In addition, the children conducted several experiments outdoors as part of the 'Outdoor learning' focus on Wednesday. The iron wool, whoosh bottle and thixotropic slime were among the children's favourite investigations and definitely required a large, outdoor space!

In summary, the children have learnt and applied their knowledge of particle theory and chemical reactions to conduct a multitude of experiments and had a brilliant time doing so!

Fayo from Maple said, "This week has been really good, the experiment helped us develop a range of skills."

Year 5 - Writing Stay & Learn

Firstly we wanted to say a huge thank you to all of the parents, carers and family members who attended the writing session today.

The focus was on our current History and Writing focus of WW2 and evcauation poetry.

The class teachers started the session by asking the class how they felt during the evacuation experience. There was a combination of emotions and feelings shared based on if they were chosen or  who they were chosen by:

Mrs Clements- A kind lady with a large house, who wanted to give children the upbringing they deserved,
Mrs Johnston- A local nurse, who lived in a small house and wanted to nurse children back to health or
Mrs Pike- A housekeeper for the local farm, who wanted strong children to do manual labour on the farm.

Throughout the WW2 Literacy unit the children had each written a letter home to their parents during the 'evacuation', which they then got the opportunity to share with the class and the family members that attended.

Lastly, the children shared their WW2 and evacuation-themed poems with their talk partners and family members.

Outdoor Classroom Day 22.5.19

Today, Broadford Primary participated in Outdoor Classroom Day.

Each class left their classroom empty and moved their learning outside.

The different activities included Science experiments, bug hunting, drawing and story-telling. Children also toasted marshmallows on a fire with their parents, maintained the flower beds and looked for angles.

This was an excellent opportunity for children to complete work in a different environment.

Year 5-WW2 Evacuation poems

Over the last two weeks, year 5 have been exploring WW2 evacuation.
Following on from our evacuation day on Thursday, the children planned and wrote poems denoting what a child might see, hear, smell, taste, feel and experience during a WW2 evacuation.

The students used a variety of poetic techniques; simile, metaphor and alliteration in order to make their poems effective and they worked collaboratively in order to edit and evaluate their poems.

Our unit on WW2 evacuation ended by the children performing their in poems in small groups as well as to the class.

Here is one stanza from a year 5 pupil;

As a helpless evacuee;
Trains hurtling along the rickety tracks,
Young children were wailing their hearts out,
my eardrums were as fragile as glass in this commotion,
children rummaging in their cases like divers at a shipwreck.

All forms must be completed and returned to Nuclear Races by Friday 17th May.

SATs Breakfast

Dear Parents/Carers,

Re: Breakfast for Year 6 pupils SATS Week (13th – 16th May 2019)

During the week of the SAT’s tests we will be inviting the pupils into school from 8am onwards and will provide a light, free of charge breakfast (toast, cereal and fruit). Pupils can enter through the normal door and self-register as normal. The breakfast will be available in the Year 6 classrooms.

It has been found that children who take up this offer are far more relaxed and less stressed as they are not rushed in the morning and are able to spend time sitting, chatting and interacting well with their friends prior to the tests. We would therefore encourage all Year 6 children to come in and join us.

We would like to stress that it is vital that your child is in school and on time the day of the tests; if they miss them they cannot re-sit them.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the year 6 teaching team.

Yours sincerely,

The Year 6 Team.

Year 5-Evacuation Day

Today the children participated in several immersive, interactive activities focusing on the process of evacuation in WW2.

The children attended school dressed like evacuees, wrote out lines in morning work, and then experienced what it was like to be chosen by different host families after being evacuated.

Mrs Pike, Mrs Johnston and Mrs Clements embodied different host families and Miss Breen adopted the stern billeting officer role. The children then wrote about their experiences in their poetry books and reflected on the experience in small groups using mind maps. The children will use their ideas to inspire their poetry writing next week.

The afternoon was filled with WW2 related crafts and games and the children were truly engrossed in the whole day!

A special thanks to Mrs Pike, Mrs Johnston and Mrs Clements for their brilliant acting skills and to all the children who participated so enthusiastically in the day.
