Forest School in Year 5 - Session 1

Forest School in Year 5

Forest School is an approach to outdoor learning which encourages children to become independent, use their imagination, take appropriate risks within boundaries and initiate learning for themselves. Forest School offers a holistic approach, incorporating children’s individuality and develops their skills for lifelong learning. It explores the outdoors and the natural environment with practical, useful activities, building upon emotional and spiritual aspects of learning where self-esteem and self-confidence can grow and positive relationships with peers can be formed. We believe every individual can achieve what they want when they are provided with a safe, nurturing and engaging learning environment.

On Thursday 12th November, a group of Year 5 children participated in the first of a series of Forest School sessions on site at Broadford. Each half term we will be working with a different group of children in Year 5.

They chose their Forest School name and made an identity necklace, where they had the option to use a palm drill to make a hole in the wooden disc.
The children particpated in a co-operative fun game using tail balls, which aided the children in learning of 'the flight' of the ball as its colourful tail helps to develop eye tracking skills.
To encourage the children to take ownership of their learning, they also spent time collecting natural resources for future sessions. Towards the end of the session the children reflected on their experiences whilst enjoying a drink and a biscuit.

The children were very excited to be a part of the group and said that they thoroughly enjoyed the session. Jackal and Jungle Owl were pleased with how the children participated in this first session.
