Snakes and Ladders in Year 5

Snakes and Ladders in Year 5

Today, Year 5 made snakes and ladders boards to try and tackle big potential bullying issues such as: racism, sexism, cyber-bullying and appearance. We had some very honest and mature conversations and then each child chose a topic and then created their board. They used the ladders for things that could help make the situation better and the snakes for things that could make them worse.

' Saying something nice about their appearance would make it better, ' Amelia

'Joining in and saying something back would make everything much worse,' Adrian

Year 6 Science - 24.11.21

Yesterday, year 6 looked at Darwin’s theory of evolution. They used different utensils to act as the different breeds of finch that inhabited the Galapagos Islands. They had to use their beaks (utensils) to see how much food they could collect to see which finch would survive with the understanding of survival of the fittest.

"So because my beak can't collect enough food, my breed of finch would die?" - Giada, Lime

"Their beaks changed over time so that they were able to survive longer, that's evolution" - Kaley, Oak

"Wow, birds have to work so hard just to get food to survive" - Molly May, Almond

Year 5's Christmas Carol Concert

We are delighted to invite parents and carers to come and join us for our carol concert in Year 5 on Thursday 9th December at 2:30pm. The concert will be taking place in the Sorrell (old) Hall and parents will be invited in through the side door to the left of the office.

To ensure that we do not exceed the capacity for the hall and to keep in line with social distancing advice, we have allocated each child with two tickets, which will be sent home with children today. Please bring these tickets along with you to the concert and our school prefects will be ready to collect them on the door.

We are so happy that we have been able to get back to normality this academic year and hold events such as these. However, it is important that we all follow the NHS COVID-19 guidelines to ensure that these types of events can continue to happen. Please be reminded that you should not attend the performance if you have tested positive for COVID-19. Furthermore, please do not attend if you have any of the following three symptoms (even if they are mild): a high temperature; a new continuous cough; a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste. To keep everyone safe, we will ensure that the doors remain open throughout the performance for ventilation. Thank you for your support on this matter.

We look forward to welcoming you on the day and sharing this wonderful time of year with you all!

Perfect Pollination in Year 5

In Science this week we have been learning about pollination and fertilisation in plants.

We learnt about the words 'stamen' and 'stigma' and their role in the pollination process.

"The bee flies to the stamen and collects pollen" - Livi

We then acted out the pollination process in groups where we pretended to be a bee, stamen, stigma, sepals and petals. We then used velcro ping pong balls as pollen and showed how it transfers from the stamen to the stigma.

The children showed great reciprocity when working together to create each part of the process.
