Year 6 Buzzing With Power!

Buzzing with Power: How Voltage Changes the Volume!

This week in Year 6, we became electrical investigators!

Our mission?

To discover how the voltage in a circuit affects the loudness of a buzzer — and the results were electrifying.

We began by setting up simple circuits using wires, batteries, and a small buzzer. Then, we experimented by changing the number of batteries (which changes the voltage). With each change, we listened closely to hear what happened.

What we discovered was exciting:
More voltage made the buzzer louder!
Less voltage made it quieter—or sometimes not buzz at all.

Lyra said, “I didn’t know adding one battery could make such a big difference.”

Tianna jumped, saying, “It's too loud- it made me jump.”

When the voltage was reduced, the buzzer became quieter, with one child commenting that it “sounded tired without enough power.” Others described it as “like giving the circuit extra energy to wake it up.”

Through careful listening and testing, pupils discovered that voltage acts like an electrical push: the stronger the push, the more energy the buzzer has to vibrate and make sound.

Year 6: Being Assertive in PSHE

Speak Up- Stand Tall:

Year 6 Learn The Importance of Assertiveness

In PSHE this week, Year 6 have been learning the importance of being assertive—speaking up confidently and respectfully.

The children created posters showing the difference between passive, aggressive and assertive behaviours, and then brought their ideas to life through drama. They acted out real-life scenarios and practised using calm, confident communication.

Here’s what some of our pupils said:

  • “Being assertive means you don’t let people walk all over you, but you don’t shout either.”
  • “I liked acting out problems because it helped me see how to fix them in real life.”
  • “It feels good to speak up without being rude.”
  • “You can still be kind and still stand your ground.”

We’re so proud of how mature and thoughtful Year 6 were. They’re learning to find their voice—and use it in a positive way!

Year 5 DT

In year 5 this term, we are going to make a bag in DT. The children will be learning how to cut a template out of material, stitch them together, create a fold fastening or handles, and then to embellish them with fabric paint, appliques and maybe even some jewels! If you have any non-stretchy material (duvets, pillow-cases etc) that you are happy to donate to school, please send it in with your child. The children are really looking forward to this project of using recycled material.

As always, thank you for your support.

The year 5 team.

Year 5's Test Whether Gruel is Cruel

This week, the Year 5's immersed themselves into the Victorians times as we begin Autumn 2's new novel - Street Child by Berlie Doherty.

The children discussed the front cover and blurb and went on to research the context of the era that the story was set. Among the research was some interesting discussions about the workhouses and the insufferable environment it would have been for many.
One of the research pieces talked in detail about the monotonous food that a resident at a workhouse would consume.
In order for the children to get a taste of what it may have been like, they watched their own portion of gruel being made (oats and water) and those who were happy to take part, formed a line to receive their gruel.

"It was thick, cold and then as you chewed it became watery!" Cruz and Abrish, Larch

" I can't imagine eating it everyday!" - Isatou, Larch

"I feel bad for those kids." - Jasmine, Larch

"I don't even like porridge, so there was no way I was going to try that!" - Daniel, Larch

“I didn’t mind it, it was a bit like cold porridge” - Elliot, Birch

“I couldn’t swallow it, it was horrible” - Aniah-Mai, Birch

“It’s so watery, how could they eat that everyday!” - Qhaleed, Birch

''Hmm, not bad''- Osman Redwood

'It's ok''- Nikita Redwood
