Year 6 Decorate Homes

Some Year 6 pupils have been set a mathematical challenge of designing and decorating a home. The pupils have been given a floor plan, an individual budget and family requirements and using these, they have to purchase suitable flooring, paint, furniture and anything else they will need. Their skills of calculating area and using conversions, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are really being put to the test as the children use iPads to research costings and calculate what they can actually afford.

I'm enjoying this challenge because I have to constantly check I can afford to buy a certain type of flooring or paint by using my mathematical skills of calculation.
Danny, Larch

This is challenging because I have to use a lot of maths skills that we have learnt throughout the year and there is a lot of conversion involved.

Year 6 Spellings 15th-19th May

Below are the Year 6 Spellings for this week.

Students are expected to practice their spellings for 15 minutes per day as well as practice their times tables and read at home. Children are encouraged to search for the definitions of the words and use them in sentences in order to gain merits for their trackers.

Year 6 Olympic Park Trip

After a week of exams, Year 6 were rewarded with a trip to the Olympic Park in Stratford. The weather was a bit grim but it didn't matter too much as the children got soaked running in and out of the water fountains anyway! As well as having fun with water, the pupils also played football, games and explored the impressive climbing structures. It was a fantastic day out and well-deserved for the children's hard work and effort.

I really liked the water fountains because I enjoyed being with all my friends and experiencing something new!

Maple's Easter Egg-scapades

Some members of Maple class were even busier than usual over the Easter break, working hard on some projects and challenges.

Jack Eve completed a 100 word challenge using the prompt 'as I turned round it changed shape'. His story (below) was great fun to read! Jack also completed some tricky magic squares and even created his own.

Freddie Lewis chose to complete a project about his favourite animals - crocodiles. He found out lots of fabulous facts and also added a number of brilliant drawings. Freddie also drew a fantastic drawing of him completing a hula hoop challenge, cheered on by his family.

Sam Doidge and Ellie-Mae Wager also completed projects about their Easter holidays demonstrating their fabulous creativity. Ellie-Mae kept a diary of her exciting activities which included photographs and mementoes from her holiday. Sam created a pictorial record of his holidays, with photos and drawings in poster form.

Last but not least, Jacob Owsley kept a diary of his adventures on his trip to the Boston, Washington and New York. One of his favourite parts was being assigned a spy mission at the International Spy Museum, including a new identity! He also brought in a copy of the Declaration of Independence to share with the rest of the class.

Year 5 Mersea Island Residential Meeting

We are delighted to be holding two meetings tomorrow (May 3rd) at 2:30pm and 5.00pm to go through the details of the Year 5 residential trip, 5th-7th June 2017. Both meetings will be covering the same content and will be a chance for us to go through the small print of how the time will be organised, what equipment/clothing they will need and what the children will be doing.

If you are unable to attend either session, please speak to your child's class teacher either before or after the meeting to get the details and handouts.
