Year 5&6 Road Safety

This afternoon Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity to watch a play and take part in a workshop about road safety. The plot of the play surrounded two cousins, who both put bicycles on their Christmas list. Their parents ensured the children were well equipped with all the safety gear. They were taught to stop, look and listen. However, one day when the cousins were out and the rain was pouring heavily they decide they need to get home quickly. One of the cousins chose to run across a busy A road and taunted his cousin to do the same. Giving into persuasion the cousin ran across the busy road ending in tragedy.

Following this powerful play the children had the opportunity to discuss the importance of standing up for what they believe is right and how it is important to use their voices to make their chooses clear. A strong message resonated through the hall as the children shared different ways the character could have avoided giving into peer pressure and stood up for the chooses they wanted to make. These conversations required the children to reflect upon how making their voices heard can be exceptionally powerful.

Year 5 - Romford Drum & Trumpet corps

Wow!

This week, we were joined by the Romford drum and trumpet corps. Each child got a chance to try an instrument and try on the uniforms (as shown in the images below). There were a collection of horns, trumpets, flutes and drums to choose from, with members of the marching band there to offer advice about the instruments. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience with some members of the year group actually attending one of their sessions and joining the youth marching band.

Miss Daly and Miss Mullan were very impressed by the behaviour of the children in the sessions and wanted to say thank you to the Romford Drum and Trumpet corps for visiting Broadford Primary School.

Year 6 Try Some Instruments

The children across year 6 were visited by the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corp. The children had the opportunity to try a range of instruments, all which could be found in a marching band. Horns, trumpets and drums, the children enjoyed experiencing first hand how the instruments worked and the arrangement of different sounds which could be made. If that wasn't enough, the children were able to try on official Romford Drum and Trumpet Corp uniform.

With their resourceful skills at the ready, all 90 children from Year 6 were taught how to march, including the very tricky turn whilst staying in perfect formation. The children had to assess the situation quickly to identify when they needed to slow down or speed up.

I got to take charge of the marching; it was very tricky at first but once I got the hang of it I really enjoyed the experience. Daniel, Larch Class.

Year 5 - Ogre Museum!

Today, Year 5 received a letter to support us with our narrative writing. We had a fantastic day feeling all the different body parts and have written fantastic sentences using our reflectiveness skills.
Miss Daly and Miss Mullan were incredibly impressed with the writing that was produced.
Keep up the great work Maple and Elm :)

Dear Broadford Year 5,

Thank you for contacting us about our ogre collection. Ogres are truly fascinating (but highly dangerous) creatures, known for their vicious temper and their voracious appetite for human and animal flesh. Children are their favourite delicacy!

We are happy to lend you some of our ogre collection but it is absolutely imperative that you follow the rules below.

Due to the fragile nature of the body parts, they cannot be exposed to light of any kind. This is very important, as too much light will cause the ogre parts to disintegrate. You are welcome to gently touch the body parts, but please do not squash them or squeeze them too hard.

Finally, it is essential that you do not reveal the secrets of the ogre to anybody outside of your classroom. Mythical creatures will conceal themselves for evermore if they believe they are in danger.

We hope you find our collection useful for describing these captivating creatures in your writing.

Kind regards,
Sir Daniel Raptus & Magnus Krane
