Year 6 meet Sven and Snowy..,

This afternoon, the Year 6 children took a trip over to Mead to meet the unusual guests waiting there- two reindeer named Sven and Snowy! The two creatures were pleased to meet the excited children despite being only 18 months old.

They were eating special moss that had been imported from Scandinavia! Apparently they eat a lot which is good as they are very energetic and can jump extremely high!

Year 6 Learning Challenge Spring 1

We are delighted to provide you with the Year 6 Learning Challenge for the first half of the Spring Term. You will notice that the activities are split into Basic, Advanced and Deep Learning. This is a way for us to look at learning at Broadford, and is designed to ensure that children not only acquire factual knowledge but also gain a further understanding about how their new skills or knowledge can be applied to their own lives or be used to further their cognitive and social development.

The theme of the Learning Challenge for this half of the Autumn term is Why should the world be ashamed of slavery?' It is entirely up to the child whether they select the poem, significant person, music or painting, or a combination of all 4. They can also select the activities that they want to attempt, though we would encourage them to deepen their learning as much as possible.

Poem

'The Slave Auction' by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper

The sale began—young girls were there,

Defenseless in their wretchedness,

Whose stifled sobs of deep despair

Revealed their anguish and distress.

And mothers stood, with streaming eyes,

And saw their dearest children sold;

Unheeded rose their bitter cries,

While tyrants bartered them for gold.

And woman, with her love and truth—

For these in sable forms may dwell—

Gazed on the husband of her youth,

With anguish none may paint or tell.

And men, whose sole crime was their hue,

The impress of their Maker’s hand,

And frail and shrinking children too,

Were gathered in that mournful band.

Ye who have laid your loved to rest,

And wept above their lifeless clay,

Know not the anguish of that breast,

Whose loved are rudely torn away.

Ye may not know how desolate

Are bosoms rudely forced to part,

And how a dull and heavy weight

Will press the life-drops from the heart.

Year 6 Spellings: 12-16 December

Below are the Year 6 Spellings for this week.

Students are expected to practice their spellings for 15 minutes per day as well as practice their times tables and read at home. Children are encouraged to search for the definitions of the words and use them in sentences in order to gain merits for their trackers.

Larch Star Writer

This week our star writer in Larch is Plamen Vasilev. Plamen produced an excellent non-chronological report on his favourite Amazon rainforest animal- the poison dart frog! Plamen used a range of sentence openers, brackets for extra information and even included a relative clause. He also used his thoughtful editing skills to improve parts from his first draft last week. A fantastic effort Plamen!

Well done Tiara McGillivary, this week's Star Writer in Redwood. Tiara wrote a fantastically rich poem which brought to life her sea creature, a dolphin. The imagery Tiara used was vivid and incredibly powerful and she also included key poetic features such as alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhyme. Beautiful presentation too!

Legal Roles and Responsibilities in Year 6

In preparation for our trip to the Royal Courts of Justice trip, the children in Year 6 have been learning about the different roles in the legal world and what each person does. The children participated in a matching activity before learning about aggravating and mitigating circumstances in a court trial. These different circumstances can greatly alter a criminal's sentence length, either by reducing or increasing the punishment or the amount of time someone will spend in prison.

I was amazed to discover that aggravating circumstances can increase a defendant's sentence, for example previous convictions and whether violence was used or not.

PC Wayne's Internet Safety Advice

This afternoon, Year 6 were lucky enough to be paid a visit by PC Wayne to participate in an Internet Safety talk to learn about how we can stay safe whilst using our electronic devices online. Did you know that social media accounts should not be used by anyone under the age of 13? The key messages from the talk were: being sensible on our social media accounts if we do have one; ensuring that we do not share any personal information over the Internet such as our addresses and phone numbers and being aware of stranger danger!

I didn't know that children under 13 shouldn't actually have social media accounts. Now I understand why, I will take greater care when using the Internet!
Anais, 10, Larch class

The Internet can be incredibly useful for staying in touch with friends and doing research but PC Wayne reminded us all that the Internet can also be a dangerous place for children and so we need to ensure children stay safe and alert when online.

Suada has also been able to accomplish the very difficult task of making her poem rhyme. This is an excellent start and Mr Light cannot wait to read Larch's finished poems!

Drapers' Academy music concert: Year 5

Tomorrow (Friday 18th November), the Year 5 children will have the fantastic opportunity to visit Drapers' Academy to join the audience for their spectacular music concert. Comprising a wide range of music from the school orchestra, the concert aims to encourage children to learn an individual instrument in the future.

The concert begins at 1.30pm and finishes by 3.00pm. The children should be back at school by the end of the day, traffic permitting. If our expected return is delayed past school finishing time, the blog and Facebook page will be updated accordingly.

Writing poetry in Redwood

This morning, the pupils in Redwood are beginning to write their poems based on a sea creature. The children selected their own creature and setting meaning that the finished pieces will be completely unique and personal. We then brainstormed ideas to use I thin our poems focusing first on appearance.

I chose a whale as my inspiration because I would like to write a peaceful poem and I think whales are calm creatures.
Brandon Brown

My poem is going to have a calm tone to it. I'm planning to use repetition and rhythm to achieve this. I'm also going to leave my ending ambiguous!

Redwood Star Writer

This week, our star writer in Redwood class is Mason Camden. In Literacy we are beginning to write our own poems and have explored the effect of metaphors within poetry.

Mason used metaphor to describe Grandad Rabbit (from Rabbit in a Cement Mixer): If Grandad Rabbit were a game, he'd be an old, dusty board game with pieces missing which nobody played with.

Great job Mason! I can't wait to see how you will describe your sea creature in your own poem.

Year 5 Geography WOW day

To celebrate the beginning of our new topic, 'What are the differences between the physical and human geographical features in the United Kingdom?', the children in Year 5 had the opportunity to explore the United Kingdom and the many things it has to offer!

The children tried a range of activities, including:

- trying to piece together all of the UK counties to make a map of the UK
- learning about the capital cities, flags and flowers of each of the countries of the UK
- investigating dialect from different parts of the UK
- finding famous landmarks (human and physical geographical features)
- tasting a range of cheeses from around the UK, including Red Leicester (which proved to be the most popular!)

Resourcefulness
The children had to utilise their logical and rational skills when explaining their reasons when matching flags, flowers and capital cities to the countries of the U.K.

"I knew the rose was the national flower of England because I had seen it before on the England rugby team's shirts" - Ellis Curtis-Rich

Redwood investigate a crime...

In preparation for their Theatre of Law experience, mock trial and Royal Courts of Justice trip, the Year 6 children have been practicising their analytical and deductive skills by solving the crime of the stolen gold watch.  The children were given suspect profiles, witness statements, interview transcripts and police evidence to study and were asked to present their evidence supporting their decision as to which suspect committed the crime.

I worked with my partner and studied the evidence carefully. I felt like an investigator!

Poem

'The Sad Mother' by Gabriela Mistral

Sleep, sleep, my beloved,
without worry, without fear,
although my soul does not sleep,
although I do not rest.

Sleep, sleep, and in the night
may your whispers be softer
than a leaf of grass,
or the silken fleece of lambs.

May my flesh slumber in you,
my worry, my trembling.
In you, may my eyes close
and my heart sleep.
