SATs Parents' Meeting Slides

Below is an overview of the slides that we discussed.

What are the SATs tests?
  • SATs week across the country lasts four days beginning on Monday 11th May 2020 and ending on Thursday 14th May 2020.
  • Pupils will complete test papers in Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.
  • Writing is assessed using evidence collected by the teacher throughout Year 6.
When and how are the SATs carried out?
  • The tests will take place during normal school hours, under exam conditions.
  • Children are not allowed to talk to each other during the tests.
  • The children’s results are sent back to school at some point in July and will go home with their End of Year Report.
  • The standard timings of tests differ but last no more than 60 minutes:
      • Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (Paper 1) - 45 minutes
      • Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (Paper 2) - 15 minutes
      • Reading - 60 minutes
      • Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) - 30 minutes
      • Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning) - 40 minutes
      • Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning) - 40 minutes
What sort of results are reported?
  • Once marked, the test will be given the following scores:
      • A raw score (the total number of marks achieved for each paper);
      • A scaled score;
      • A judgement of whether the National Curriculum has been met.
  • A scaled score is a range from 80 to 120.
  • A scaled score of 100 or more is meeting the national standard.
  • There are no separate tests for higher achieving pupils; however, a scaled score close to 120 would show that a child is working above the national standard.
Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
  • Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling is made up of two papers which will take place on Monday 11th May 2020.
  • Paper 1 lasts 45 minutes. Children will be tested on grammar, punctuation and spelling generally;
  • Paper 2 is a shorter paper lasting 15 minutes, where children will be tested on spelling only - they are asked to fill in a blank within a sentence, attempting to spell out the spelling word in context correctly.
Reading

  • The Year 6 Reading SATs will be on Tuesday 12th May 2020.
  • The assessment has been designed to measure whether children's comprehension of age-appropriate reading material meets the national standards.
  • Within the 60 minute time, children read three texts and answer a range of questions.
  • There are three different set texts for the children to read, which could be any combination of non-fiction, fiction and/or poetry.
The reading paper focuses on different skills.
  • Retrieval is one of these skills.
  • To retrieve information from a text, children must understand what they are reading.
  • Retrieval questions can include:
      • Where does the story take place?
      • What did s/he/it look like?
      • Who are the characters in the book?
      • What do you think is happening in the book?
Maths
  • Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) will take place on Wednesday 13th May 2020.
  • Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning) will take place on Wednesday 13th May 2020.
  • Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning will take place on Thursday 14th May 2020.
  • The papers require children to demonstrate their mathematical knowledge and skills as well as their ability to solve problems and their mathematical reasoning.
Further learning opportunities
On Monday 27th January, children received workbooks for Maths, Reading and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling along with their weekly spellings.
  • The class teacher will set pages from the book that your child will need to complete throughout the week.
  • The books will be handed in with their spelling book on a Friday.
  • The books must come to school with your child everyday.
  • If your child is unable to complete the work at home, they will be invited to attend a lunchtime club on Monday or Wednesday.
  • The lunchtime club will be run by a member of staff who will be able to help your child if they need extra support answering the questions.

How can I support my child in preparing for their SATs?
  • Direct any questions or concerns you have about SATs to your child's teacher, rather than worry your child with them;
  • Try to provide a quiet corner for homework that's as free from distractions as possible;
  • Encourage your child to talk to their teacher or another adult they trust if they express persisting anxieties about SATs;
  • Ensure your child is eating and drinking well and getting a suitable amount of sleep;
  • Encourage your child to complete the workbooks at home or in school on Monday or Wednesday at lunchtime.
