Year 5 Spring newsletter

Year 5 - Spring Curriculum Newsletter

A warm welcome back to the Spring term from the Year 5 team!  We hope you find this letter informative; please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries using our inbox: year5@broadford.havering.sch.uk

Homework:

Our expectation at Broadford is that every child should do the following every night:

● 15 minutes reading to themselves or an adult (signed in the reading record)

● 15 minutes practising spellings in their spelling book

● 15 minutes rehearsing times tables facts (including multiplication and division)

Sumdog and Times Table Rock Stars:

Every child has now received their login details for Sumdog and Times Table Rockstars, which means they can access their accounts outside of school. Both websites offer valuable resources that can support your child’s learning in maths so please encourage your child to use them.

Spellings:

Spellings will be given out on Mondays, they can also be found on the school blog each week. The children should practise their words every evening. Spelling books and reading records must be brought in on Fridays, which is when the weekly test happens. This will be closely monitored.

P.E Lessons, Swimming and Forest School

Almond and Oak classes  will have PE lessons every Friday  afternoon and all classes on Monday afternoon. Children are expected to come to school in their PE uniform - navy shorts/tracksuit bottoms, plain white t-shirt, plain navy sweatshirt (no hoodies) and trainers. Please ensure all PE kit items are clearly labelled.

This year all children will participate in Forest School, which will take place on Monday afternoons on a three week rota.  In preparation for your child's first session, please send into school, for your child, a pair of tracksuit/jogging trousers and a pair of welly boots/old trainers/walking boots, in a named carrier bag.  These can stay in school. Please make sure that children have weather appropriate attire, so that they can fully enjoy the sessions, even on a rainy day!

Lime class will be swimming every Wednesday from the 8th January 2025. Children in Lime class should come to school in their school uniform on Wednesdays.

Children will require:

● swimming trunks or one piece-costume

● a swimming hat (please write your child’s name in large letters on the outside of the hat with a permanent marker)

● towel

NB: Watches must not be worn during swimming sessions

Reading Books

As reading is a huge priority here at Broadford, we will do our best to encourage the children to change their books regularly and every child will read 1:1 with an adult at least once a week. Please remind the children to let any adults know if they need to change their book and that it is their responsibility to bring any old reading books back to school. The children are strongly encouraged to read books from the 105 books to read at Broadford list. The children all have trackers for these books which the teacher will check off for them.

School Uniform

It has been wonderful to see the Year 5 pupils return to school looking very smart in their school uniform. Please be reminded that the school colours are grey and navy. All school uniform is available through Khalsa schoolwear.
