Year 5 Star Writers - 26.01.18

The Star Writer in Willow class this week is Finley Redmond.  Finley used a great range of openers to vary his writing, adding interest for his reader. He also successfully used 'show not tell' throughout his writing to build imagery and engage his reader with Mai-ling's quest.

Maple's Star Writer this week is Timothy Dempsey.  Timothy spent considerable time evaluating the vocabulary he had used in his story and editing his writing to ensure it fully engaged his reader and gave a suitably gruesome depiction of the ogre!

This week's Star Writer for Elm Class is Mia Gallagher. Throughout her writing Mia has embedded a range of fronted adverbials to guide her reader through the story and show how time has moved on in the character's quest.

Georgia and Sienna: The Origami Experts

In Redwood, we love it when children do unusual activities at home and show the rest of the class what they have been up to so we were thrilled when Georgia and Sienna brought in some origami they made at home.

The girls spent hours creating swans and frogs by using intricate paper folding techniques from Japan.
Their favourite was the frog because they engineered it so that it can actually spring!

Great effort Georgia and Sienna!

Around the World in a Term: What have we been doing?

So far in the Broadford University Around the World in a Term course, the students have been busy globetrotting and have already visited the USA, Brazil and France!

In Brazil, the pupils made vibrant and exciting carnival masks and learned about what makes the Carnival so exciting. The pupils used a range of resources to make their masks and can't wait to show them off.

The next country we visited was France. The children created Eiffel Tower pictures made of straw and got a unique opportunity to try Camembert cheese, Brie cheese, baguette, croissants and a hot chocolate.

I really enjoyed trying the French food. I hadn't eaten Brie or Camembert before but I gave them a try and really liked them!

Year 6 Spellings 29th January- 2nd February

Below are the Year 6 Spellings for this week. The weekly test will be on a Thursday this week due to the trip on Friday to the Museum of London and children should hand their books in on this day too.  Pupils are expected to practice their spellings for 15 minutes per day as well as practice their times tables and read at home. Children are encouraged to search for the definitions of the words and use them in sentences in order to gain merits for their tracker.

Redwood Star Writer

Our Star Writer in Redwood this week is Freddie Lewis. Well done Freddie for putting in so much hard work and effort into making your writing a success!

Freddie impressed Miss Chau because of the personal stamp he put on the biography he wrote, which really made it his own. He also ensured a range of openers and sentence types in his writing- hooking the reader in and making the writing come to life. The biography was a joy to read and Freddie should be very proud of his achievement.

CSI Road Safety Performance

This afternoon, Year 6 were visited by a road safety performance group who turned the hall into a crime scene. Unfortunately, a teenage boy had been knocked over by a car, and crime scene investigators asked the children to work out whose fault it was and how the accident could have been avoided. Using clues which had been left and testimonies from witnesses, the children enjoyed unraveling what really happened.

The accident could have been avoided if people had made different choices. The driver shouldn't have been distracted by her baby and the teenage boy should have looked before he crossed the road and not been on his phone. Accidents can be avoided!

Netball Stars

Today, our Broadford netball stars took on St Ursula's in a gruelling game. With resilience on their side, Broadford battled a good game: they intercepted balls from the air, ensured their passes were accurate and, most importantly, held their heads high, never giving up. A particular shoutout goes to Tia, who proved she is a tough cookie and a force to be reckoned with, as well as Mr Bartnik, who put on a true display of sportsmanship.

On the final blow of the whistle, Broadford came away victorious with an 8-5 win! Congratulations to lovely Levan, who was then nominated by St Ursula's as their player of the match. It is no surprise given his fantastic drives down the court, effortless shooting and great show of reciprocity.

Thank you to Tia, Levan, Sienna, Oliwier, Caydon, Jessica, Martin, Yemi and Timi for your fabulous performance. You should be very proud of yourselves. Keep it up team, let's go for gold!

Year 5 Star Writers - 19.01.18

This week Elm Class's Star Writer is Daniel Tonu. Daniel has written a well thought through adventure story. He has considered how his word choices affect the reader and used a range of fronted adverbials to move the story on.

This week in Willow Class, the Star Writer is Ranita Aryibi. Her adventure story oozed originality and used a range of sentence types to fully engage her reader.

In Maple Class, the Star Writer this week is Callum Watson.  He has carefully considered a range of different sentence types to increase the quality of his descriptive writing, ensuring his reader has a clear image of the hideousness of the ogre.

Red, yellow and black for Brandina

Today, Broadford have been exceptional (as always) in raising money for Brandina, a girl who we sponsor in Uganda. Thanks to your help, generosity and support, the children dressed up in an item of red, yellow or black clothing and were able to raise £276.00 towards the charity 'Watato.'

As a result of your contributions, Brandina will have greater access to education, medical care and nutritious food. Brandina contacted us directly to inform us that, as a result of our support, she has excelled in her education with a first grade, which is fantastic to hear.

Tyler Shephard - It's really nice to know that the money we give helps another child go to school. I can't imagine not being able to go to school.

Thank you again for your contributions. Your support with this fantastic cause is always appreciated.

Attention Netballers

To Parents and Carers of those representing Broadford netball team,

Today, your child will have received this letter regarding our netball match on Tuesday.

If you could get this returned on Monday (Tuesday latest) that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your cooperation. Let's hope for another win...

Year 6 Star Writers

This week, our star writers in Year 6 are Tegan Sage in Redwood and Archie Patrick-Stuart from Larch. Both of these pupils impressed their teachers because they wrote fantastic biographies about Olaudah Equiano, a former slave who became free and went on to campaign against slavery for the rest of his life.

Tegan really worked on her spelling and use of WOW vocabulary which had a fantastic impact on her writing as a whole. She ensured that she used paragraphs to break up the key parts of his life and edited her work thoroughly too. Well done Tegan!

Archie has made a huge effort to concentrate in class and has ensured that he has followed the structure very carefully. Archie has also experimented with new words and this has made his biography on Olaudah Equiano a pleasure to read. Super work Archie!

Brandina NON-SCHOOL UNIFORM 19.01.18

Dear Parents and Carers,

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow, pupils from the school council are hosting a non-school uniform day in aid of Brandina, who is the pupil we sponsor in Uganda.

Pupils are invited to wear one piece of non-uniform, representing the colours of the Ugandan flag (red, black and yellow) and a contribution of 50p towards the charity of 'Watato' would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to raising money tomorrow in a fun and exciting way!

Fun Fitness

Last Friday Mr Light and Mr Portway kicked off Broadford University with a brand new course of Fun Fitness. Over the next 10 weeks the children will be 'put through their paces' completing a range of physical and mental challenges to improve their all-round fitness. Friday was just the beginning with a fun warm up activity of 'nought and crosses' followed by some very close relay races eventually edged by the green team.

Ethan Gibbs, Larch, said after 'Mr Light I can feel my legs aching already!'

Below is what else is coming up for the Fun Fitness students:

For the first time in Broadford University history, pupils will be given an opportunity to travel the world and discover culture and customs from a variety of countries by making, doing, trying and seeing.

Highlights of the course include: making vibrant Rio carnival masks; trying sushi from Japan; creating a hip-hop dance and a rap in the style of US stars; and making an Eiffel Tower out of straws

Year 6 Star Writers

This week our star writers are Alfie Donnelly from Redwood and Ethan Gibbs from Larch.

Mr Light was impressed by Ethan's use of relative clauses and the key features he remembered to include in his biography. Well done Ethan!

Alfie has been awarded star writer due to his hard work in class to write his biography. Alfie wrote chronologically and ensured that he edited his work carefully to make it his best. Well done Alfie!

Year 5 Spring 1 Learning Challenge

We are delighted to provide you with the Year 5 Learning Challenge for the first half of the Spring Term. You will notice that the activities are split into Basic, Advanced and Deep Learning. This is a way for us to look at learning at Broadford, and is designed to ensure that children not only acquire factual knowledge but also gain a further understanding about how their new skills or knowledge can be applied to their own lives or be used to further their cognitive and social development.

The theme of the Learning Challenge for this half of the Spring term is 'How has electricity changed the world?' It is entirely up to the child whether they select the poem, significant person, music or painting, or a combination of all 4. They can also select the activities that they want to attempt, though we would encourage them to deepen their learning as much as possible.

Poem
'Light Bulb' by Cameron Logan

There once was a lone light bulb,
which lit this front porch, just for me,
every night, it'd find the power,
to give me light so I could see,

For years and years, the bulb would shine,
I took for granted all its light,
and when the darkness fell upon me,
The bulb would make the darkness bright,

But as time passed, the bulb burnt out,
and all its light became no more,
for once, I saw not who I was,
but all the wrong I'd done before,

As my hopeless eyes grew weary,
I went inside to grab a bulb,
but no other light could take it's place,
the task was much too bold,

and nothing would ever be the same.

Maple Class Swimming

To all parents/carers of Maple class children,

Just a quick reminder that the children's swimming sessions will begin tomorrow, Monday 8th January.

Children will be returning to school at approximately 3.15 and can be picked up from Maple class, along with any siblings.

Please make sure your child comes to school with:
Swimming costume/trunks
A towel
Named bag to store items
Swimming hat
Goggles (if preferred)

Please note, no aerosols or powders should be given to children, as these can cause problems for children with asthma. Please also ensure that your child brings their swim suit to change into at the pool, and does not wear it under their school uniform. Children should also be wearing shoes which they are able to take on or off quickly and without adult support.

Thank you for your cooperation.
