Year 5-Roots to Food session

This morning KS2 attended a Roots To Food presentation. In this interactive and engaging session students learnt about different food groups, how to make a healthy portion and the importance of a healthy breakfast.

The children then participated in a cook-off with Mr Nicol in the orange team and Mrs Nichols in the green team. The groups were tasked with producing a balanced meal in 15 minutes with the help of the audience and pupil helpers. Orange team won overall, but green team received positive comments regarding their presentation!

It was very entertaining morning and the children came away with a greater understanding of healthy eating.

Summer Rose expressed her delight, “I think it was really fun when we found out who the pupil helpers were.”

Year 5 - Crazy coin race!

Today, Year 5 have had a 'Children in Need' fun-filled-day and we particularly enjoyed the coin race after break time.

Even though the weather was a little bit wet, it didn't stop the excitement.

The race really was on...

Both classes collected copper coins from home throughout the week, (a huge thank you to all parents, carers and families that donated the coins) and with all the coins we raced lining up our coins, out on the play ground.

Elm and Maple both lined up, shared the coins and worked with their classes showing their reciprocity skills.

Whoever created the longest line, was crowned the winner!

Elm created a huge line of 39metres...

and Maple just beat them with created a line of 46metres!

Miss Breen, Mrs Pike and Miss Daly were incredibly impressed with the team work in both classes and how supportive everyone was.

Year 5- Anti Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week is a way of raising awareness about bullying. It is a week during which we learn about bullying and how to deal with it. This week was anti-bullying week and as a year group we discussed 'What is Bullying?'

We identified the different types of bullying:

Physical Bullying
Verbal Bullying
Social Bullying
Cyber Bullying

We also discussed the affects of Bullying. We thought that is could leave people feeling:

Hurt
Left out
Sad
Lonely
Scared
Upset

This morning we were joined by the 'Firehorse Production' company, who re-enacted what should happen if you are being bullied, or if you see someone being bullied.

"The show today was really good as it clearly explained how serious bullying is." Conner

"I liked the show because the actors showed what the different types of bullying are and how we can help." Gracee- May

Year 5- Pudsey Baking!

Yesterday, Maple and Elm had a VERY busy afternoon decorating and designing for the bake sale this afternoon.

Mrs Johnston very kindly baked us some delicious chocolate and vanilla cup cakes for us to decorate.

With bright yellow butter icing for Pudsey's face and colourful polka dot smarties, we all created 'Children in Need' themed cup cakes to sell at the bake sale.

We hope you all enjoyed them!

Year 5 - Smelling Senses Experiment

In Year 5 we are exploring the five human senses in Science. Yesterday, we conducted a smell experiment in which the children were required to identify a variety of different smells such as cinnamon and shampoo, whilst blindfolded.

The children were working in partners; taking it in turns to detect the smells and record their predictions. This experiment was therefore an an excellent test of their teamwork, reciprocity and listening skills.

The children approached the task with scientific curiosity as well as a keen awareness of the health and safety requirements of the task. The activity was therefore a great success!

Tyler in Elm expressed his delight at tackling this lesson,
“I enjoyed smelling the different items and working together to find out what they were. It was really fun.”
