TfL data workshop
Yesterday year 5 and year 6 enjoyed the visit of Transport for London for a workshop on how data is used to shape millions of journeys every year. The children looked at how TFL categorise which routes and stations are the busiest at different times of the day, created a human bar chart in how they travel into school and even got to see how pedestrian crossings are operated with specialist cameras counting the number of people waiting by the side of the road! Perhaps though the real highlight of the day was when the children had the opportunity to create a real life simulation of how a traffic jam can be prevented with TFL research and data- something I'm sure we are all keen to see in action!

Year 6 Star Writers
This week our star writers in Year 6 were Lillie-Jo Guidotti and Lola-Mae Trinder.
Lillie has written a fantastic flashback story which she has really made her own with personalisation and humour. She also paid attention to her sentence structure and experimented with different sentence types too. Well done Lillie!
Lola has completed a brilliant flashback story and has used a range of openers to hook her reader in. She experimented with a range of sentence types, including 3-ed openers and paid extra attention to editing her spelling mistakes. Well done Lola!
Year 6 NSPCC Workshop
The whole school were lucky enough to have a visitor from the NSPCC, who came to visit the children to talk about how to stay safe. The purpose of the workshop was to give the children the life skills to recognise the signs of abuse and get the help that they require. During the workshop, the children were given the opportunity to explore various situations and discuss in groups how they felt about the situation and how the situation should be handled. They explored various issues such as physical and emotional abuse, inappropriate films and messages, staying safe online and bullying. Furthermore the children were signposted to who their 'trusted adults' might be.
This workshop was really interesting and a good reminder for us to know who we can talk to if we need to share something that has happened.

Sam's Science Learning Challenge
Sam Doidge has spent a week creating a fabulous project based on Thomas Edison for the Science Learning Challenge. Sam made the lightbulb by using paper mache, a balloon and paint and then researched facts on Mr Edison. Sam discovered that Edison not only invented the lightbulb but also the phonograph amongst other things.
What a fantastic effort Sam- well done! We love to celebrate your achievements and hard work at home so thank you for bringing your project in.
I didn't know that Thomas Edison also created the motion picture camera. He was very talented!

BROADFORD NETBALL STARS
Today, Broadford truly showed that they are absolute superstars! Determined to be successful in their match against Hilldene, our netballers attended a training session yesterday AND even dedicated some of their own lunchtime to ensure their set plays were flawless and movement on the court was silky smooth.
I am sure that parents, who were watching the game, will agree that the children's resilience paid off, as they looked flawless out on court. Their passing was accurate, their interceptions were striking and their feeds into the semi circle were impeccable.
Working as a team, Broadford managed to secure a 13-3 lead! An absolutely incredible result, causing smiles all round and a very VERY happy Miss Taylor, who is using this opportunity to gloat.
Congratulations to our wonderful squad: Ranita, Levan, Sienna, Oliwier, Tia, Martin, Yemi, Ja'Shayla and Jessie. A special well done to Oliwier Bartnik who was unanimously voted as player of the match. This is no surprise given your admirable work ethic and conscientious efforts to ensure a win today.
Year 6 Science Workshop
This afternoon in Year 6, the pupils were lucky enough to participate in a Science workshop with a real 'Mad' scientist- Gooey Stuey. The children learnt about Isaac Newton and how for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
We started with an experiment based around rockets and Caitlin and Freddie proved how the rocket with the balloon would be slower than the one without because the air would push against the balloon. The pupils also discussed aerodynamics and how we could make the perfect rocket!
In an experiment on thrust, the children experimented how to get their balloon to move along the string using only a straw and some sellotape. Once the children achieved it horizontally, they were then tasked with getting the balloon to move vertically. Lethu and Caitlin achieved this first!
The experiments were fun because we got to investigate thrust in groups. Not many other schools get to do a workshop like this so we're really lucky!
Ellis, Redwood
I can't wait until I can get home and play with my new rockets!
Charlie, Larch
I wonder what else we can make easily with scientific experiments

Inspirational Woman
As we celebrated International Women's Day, this occasion provided Year 5 with the opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a positive role model and how progression in society is a role which everyone is responsible for.
In our classes, we discussed who we think has fit the criteria of an inspirational woman and paved the way for change. In Year 5, we agreed that Malala Yousafzai is a woman to look up to, as a result of her courage and determination to not be silenced.
'We chose Malala because we could not believe how brave she was to carry on campaigning for girls being allowed to go to school and get an education after she had been shot by the Taliban in Pakistan on her way to school. She has helped us to appreciate how lucky we are to have the gift of education and to make a good life for ourselves.' Year 5.
To recognise her influence, Year 5 created a portrait of Malala in pop art style!

Year 5 Star Writers - 09.03.18
Maple's Star Writer this week is Henry Cruz Kokonchev. He carefully researched the life of the famous author Jeremy Strong, enabling him to write a successful biography that engages his reader. Using organisational features (such as subheadings) and relative clauses to add detail, Henry's writing was fabulous!
The Star Writer in Elm Class this week is Lucian Bundy. He has successfully produced a clear and informative biography about Jeremy Strong. Throughout his writing Lucian has used relative clauses to provide his reader with additional information and varied sentence types to engage the reader.
Willow's Star Writer this week is Cruz Carey. Cruz produced a phenomenal biography on Jeremy Strong. He not only managed to use relative clauses to add extra information, used a range of openers and appropriate subheadings, but he also embedded humour. A great biography Cruz!

School Council to City Hall
Yesterday, our wonderful School Council representatives went on an adventure to City Hall, which was an absolutely stunning building, and apparently took longer to build than the shard (despite the difference in height.)
On arrival, we went to the conference room, where we received our very own City Hall pen, book and bag. The book and pen came in very handy as the children were then informed on how the City of London is run and could jot down any notes.
Following this, we headed to the assembly, where we met the actual Mayor, who was being questioned about transport for London. We don't mean to brag, but Broadford even received a special shout out during the question time as we were welcomed in.
The children also had the opportunity to look at how London has changed through the years and ask any questions before proceeding to eat our lunch with the stunning views of our city.
Year 6 World Book Day
This morning in Year 6, Mr Light and Miss Chau were surprised to see a host of famous book characters instead of their usual pupils. We had two Cats in the Hat; the helpful Hermione Granger; Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid; the fierce Shere Khan from the Jungle Book; a very hungry Oliver Twist; a very grumpy Mr Stink; the Joker from the Batman comics; Sophie from the BFG; Macbeth's Hamlet; the evil Sauron from Lord of the Rings; two very sparkly unicorns; Frankenstein; Alice in Wonderland and many others!
I chose to dress up as Sauron because Lord of the Rings is a great story and Sauron is so evil.

Boys moving on: Crow Camp
On Monday the 'Boys Moving On' group visited the scouts camp at Crow Camp, Noak Hill. This was the final part of their course and gave the boys to showcase all of the character traits and skills learned throughout the last few months. The boys completed a range of activities from den building to toasting marshmallows where using skills such as communication, organisation and reciprocity helped to complete the tasks. From the photos below you can see how much fun the boys had on this exciting day out!
Michael Rack: ' I enjoyed making fires because at first I didn't succeed but I persevered and managed to get a big fire going in the end!'
