Year 6 Stubbers Update

The children slept well (eventually), had a breakfast fit for royalty and are now busy on their activities.
They are driving 4x4 trucks, aiming for the target in archery, scaling the high wall and chasing rubber ducks in their kayaks. More updates later.

Stubbers photos

It wouldn't be surprising if the children in Year 5 were asleep by now after their busy and action-packed day at Stubbers today.
They have been sailing, all-terrain boarding, working together to complete team-challenges and even learning how to make fire in a valuable bushcraft session.
The Year 6 children are currently on an evening walk around the Stubbers grounds before they head back to their accommodation for a good night's rest ahead of another fun-filled day tomorrow.
Today they have been woggle boarding, completing their own team challenges, rifle shooting and scaling heights in a high-rope walking exercise.

All of the children had a wonderful time today, and were all so brilliantly behaved. Well done years 5 and 6!

Stubbers are go!

Years 5 and 6 have safely arrived at Stubbers for an action packed day. The lucky year 6s are here until Friday! Everyone is very excited and into their first activity.

Y5 & Y6's Sunny Maths Session

Year 5 and 6 were able to enjoy the sunshine this morning during their Math sessions.

Miss Reynolds' class were reading various scales of millilitres and litres in order to solve problems involving capacity. Of course they were being very careful not to get too wet in the glorious sunshine! They were very challenged as some of the problems were written in millilitres, some were decimal fractions of litres, and others were a mixture of both!

Whereas Miss Howson's class were busy creating painted Pie Charts about data that they had collected about people's number of siblings, colour of socks and favourite subjects. They put this information into a tally chart before drawing and calculating accurately measured Pie Charts.

It is fair to say that they certainly all made the most of the sunshine!

Broadford's Got Shadow Talent

In Science this half term Year 5 and 6 have been learning about light and shadows.

This afternoon, Willow were learning about how shadows are made bigger and smaller. They were inspired by watching a video clip of Britain's Got Talent winners, Attraction, in their first audition in front of the judges.

Miss Reynolds challenged the children in Willow to recreate a part of Attraction's performance, demonstrating how to make shadows bigger and smaller. The children were allowed to use their bodies and make some shadow puppets.

"It was quite challenging!" said James. "It was much harder than I thought it was going to be to make an effective shadow. I figured out that if you move the puppet closer to the light then the shadow looks bigger, but move it further away and it looked smaller."

The results, as you can see, were very pleasing! Well done Willow!

UPDATE FOR YEAR 5 DRAPERS TRIP

Our Year 5 children are now due to be back at school at around 3:45pm.
They have called to say that they are enjoying their taster session at Drapers Academy a tremendous amount and so have asked to stay a little while longer. Consequently, this means that the children are now due back at school at a slightly later time.
We are certainly looking forward to hearing what they have been up to on their taster session at Drapers Academy this afternoon!

Our afternoon at Drapers so far...

The year 5s are busy baking goodies at Drapers Academy this afternoon and devising a business plan to sell them. Here is a sneak peak of the day so far

Year 5 Reminder

Just a reminder to parents that year 5 will be off to Drapers Academy this afternoon for an exciting taster session.
They are leaving school via coach at approximately 12:30 and will be back at around 3pm before the end of the school day.

Year 5 are on their way home!

Year 5 are on their way home from the Globe Theatre. They have had a lovely time and have learned an awful lot more about how Shakespeare staged his plays at the Globe and about the play Romeo and Juliet. The children even got to have a look around the theatre itself!
The children even had time for a photo opportunity on Millennium Bridge and lunch by the Thames.
They are currently on the train, just passing Manor Park. Our EST is 3:45.

Year 5 have set off on their trip!

Year 5 have left school and are at Harold Wood Station waiting for their train. They are all very excited to be off to the Globe Theatre today. We will keep you update throughout the day!

Table Tennis Decimals

Miss Reynolds' Maths class were today split into 2 teams; A and B. Each team was given 50 points to begin with, and played some tense table tennis in order to be declared the winner. Each time the ball was successfully hit to the opposing team 10 points were deducted from the initial 50 score. However if the ball went off of the table, only 2 points were scored. The overall winner was the team with the FEWEST points.

The game was all in aim of encouraging the children to count back using negative numbers. The children then had to decide which team was the winner depending on which score was the smallest number.

And the winner was....TEAM A!! Well done to those children!

Captivating Characters

Year 5 and 6 were very busy this morning getting to grips with the characters in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The children thought very carefully about traits that made each character special, including what colour would best represent the individual's personality and why.

This is all in preparation for the Romeo and Juliet play that the children will be writing their own version of and staging themselves and will be performed in a few weeks time. Watch this space for tickets for what will surely be a Shakespeare spectacle!
