This week, our classes looked at how shared values like honesty, kindness, and integrity guide people in their daily lives. We used Islamic teachings to see how different beliefs provide a "roadmap" for doing the right thing.
The children explored three main sources of guidance: wise words (Qur’an), helpful sayings (Hadith), and good examples (Sunnah). We then linked these to universal goals that everyone can appreciate:
Being kind to our families.
Keeping our promises.
Helping those in need.
To finish, the children worked in groups to perform "Freeze-Frame" scenes. They acted out tricky situations - like deciding whether to tell the truth - and used their "narrator" to explain how following these positive values leads to the best outcome.
It was a fantastic session that showed how, no matter our backgrounds, we can all work together to build a kinder community!
Living Things and Their Habitats
Move – plants bend toward the light, and roots grow down into the soil.
Reproduce – plants can grow from seeds or even from little shoots.
Grow and change – just like children do!
Excrete waste – all living things get rid of what they don’t need.

This week in Year 6, the children have been tasting biscuits as part of their new Design and Technology unit. They started the lesson by considering what dietary needs are important and why. We looked at the different biscuits that were available in the supermarkets and what dietary needs they covered. The children tasted four different biscuits and had to think about the texture, appearance, taste and smell of each one. They then rated each biscuit accordingly. The children used their reciprocity skills when working as part of a group and made their decision on what type of biscuit they would like to make in our future Design and Technology lesson.
“My favourite biscuit was the ginger nut because it tasted a bit spicy.” Cameron, Birch
"This is the best lesson of the day by far. I enjoyed tasting the biscuits, talking about the flavours and textures. My favourite was the ginger biscuit - I liked the little burning sensation after I ate it!" - Oliver, Redwood.
"I didn't realise there were different types of biscuits for different dietary needs. " - Emma
The children have been studying different artists who use their art to communicate important messages. We have discussed artists who use different mediums to express their views speaking up for sectors of
their community.
We have asked questions such as
‘Why is activism art important?’
The children have reflected on the messages portrayed and discussed their opinions.
They have then gone onto think about a message that they believe should be promoted in their own posters,
for example:
global warming, mental health awareness or the cost of living.
' Artists are spreading important messages through posters, print and murals.' Nehemiah, Redwood.
“I like how creative the artists are when they’re giving their message to their community.” Elyakim, Birch
Year 6 Learn About the Local Foodbank
Last week, Year 6 were visited by a volunteer from the Harold Hill Foodbank. Dennis explained to Year 6 what a foodbank is, how they began, how their one started and told us all about the amazing work they do to support our local community.
The children asked some excellent questions and reflected on the impact of the food bank.
At the end of the talk, Dennis gave the children leaflets about the foodbank and a list of items that are really helpful for them to have to make their packages. We have challenged Year 6 to bring in as much food as possible so that we can deliver some food to the foodbank and support the incredible work they do.
The items are: tinned meat/ fish, tinned vegetables/ fruit, cooking sauces, tea, coffee, milk (UHT), cereals, biscuits, fruit juice (long life), instant mashed potato, rice pudding and custard.
There will be a collection area in Year 6 (and in the office) for any optional donations. Miss Wyatt will be taking some children to the foodbank to deliver the items after half term so please start bringing in any donations from now!
'The talk was very motivational. It has encouraged me to give things to the foodbank." Meerab, Redwood
"I learnt that they need food to help feed people in Harold Hill." George, Larch
"They help lots of people in need." Cameron, Birch
Thank you in advance for your donations - we are proud to be supporting our local community!
