Year 5 PSHE emotion thermometer

Today in PSHE we discussed the range and intensity of emotions people can feel and how to cope with these feelings. The children produced an 'emotion thermometer' which detailed the scale of the emotions they feel and how they express these emotions. As part of this, we discussed how they could move down the thermometer if they reached the top end of the scale and felt overwhelmed.

The children explained how creating an emotion thermometer gave them a better understanding of their feelings and how to manage them.

Year 6 Puberty, Reproduction and Healthy Relationships

Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of the National Curriculum, we will be delivering a ‘Puberty, Reproduction and Healthy Relationships’ lesson on Wednesday 10th July.

Following the National Curriculum and the Sex and Relationships Education Guidance of 2017, the emphasis will be on managing the changes to the body and positive, healthy relationships but we will also cover how babies are conceived and born. The children will also be given the opportunity to ask any questions anonymously. The session will be led by the Year 6 team and Mrs Ward.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from these sessions if that is their wish.

If you wish to withdraw your child from the session please return the form, which can be found on the letter sent home this afternoon, as soon as possible. If we do not receive a form by Wednesday 10th July at 10:00am we will presume you are giving permission for your child to attend this session.

Dads - Let's Talk About Puberty with Rev Rich

CSI Road Safety Workshop

Many people are unaware that the number of fatalities amongst young people caused by road accidents are higher than deaths from other external causes, including those that receive much more publicity from the media. Last half term Year 6 took part in a workshop to teach clear road safety messages effectively and consistently, using drama to help the children understand and manage risks.

The children were investigating a fatal road traffic accident and had to question witnesses and ask inquiring questions to solve the incident.

Year 6 girls: Nurse visit

On Tuesday 15th September at 9am the year 6 girls will be visited by the school nurse, who will be giving them information about body changes, puberty, periods and answering questions about a whole range of topics relevant to our girls in this stage of their physical development. Parents are welcome to join the girls on Tuesday. We will not need notice of you coming, but please feel free to come and join them on Tuesday for the nurse session. 

We are looking into arranging something similar for the boys in the near future. 

Junior Citizenship Day

Year 6 spent this morning at the Romford Army Reserve Centre taking part in the Havering Junior Citizenship Event. The children were greeted by PC Wayne Hopkyns as they arrived for their introductory talk about today's activities. The children were put into groups and told that  they would be taking part in a variety of workshops. 

First activity the children were discussing travel safety, how to travel on buses safely and rules and regulations when travelling. 

Afterwards we went to the abandoned shelter experience - we walked through an 'abandoned' building and discussed the dangers which could be found. There were empty cans, litter, food packages and animal faeces. We were convinced that a dangerous animal lived in the building but it was actually a person. This experience was truly terrifying as the 'person' jumped out at us as if to attack. It really made the children think about why they should never enter any abonanded buildings.

Next the children entered the Youth Bus and were given a tea, challenge. Working together, they completed the task through discussion and teamwork!

In addition, the children took part in a Road Saftey workshop which focused on making sure that they always wore their helmets when riding their bikes. We were given a demonstration to show what would happen if we were on a bike and had an accident with and without a bike helmet! 

After that we watched a peer pressure show and had to discuss everything that was wrong with the scenario and what you should do if your 'friends' try to make you do something you feel uncomfortable about.

Next, we were met my two police officers who spoke to us about knife crime. We had to follow the rules and regulations and sort a selection of knives and sharp objects into those which are illegal and legal.

After a while , we went to the Fire Brigade session and learnt about the speed at which a fire burns. It was interesting to know, that the imagine of smoke in movies , white smoke and a few coughs, is extremely deceptive! In real-life if an adult was to breathe in the dark black smoke they would become unconscious within two breaths and  die if they still continued to inhale the smoke.

Then we discussed our local environment and how to recycle and reduce waste.

Lastly, we had a London Ambulance session, did you know that on average there are 6,000 phone calls requesting an ambulance in the London area alone! We learnt about DR ABC which stands for DANGER - RESPOSNE - AIRWAYS - BREATHING - CALL 999! This should be done before any CPR takes place.

Healthy Eating Week

This afternoon, Year 6 have been making healthy Berry Pots. This week we are part of a record breaking number of schools who have registered to be involved in the BNF Healthy Eating Week 1-5th June 2015. As a school we are promoting the 5 challenges which are having a healthy breakfast, have 5 a day, drink plenty of water, get active and try something new. 

Year 5 Random Acts Of Kindness

Our lovely Year 5s teamed up with Reverend Rich to perform some random acts of kindness today. Maple travelled to Hilldene Shops to hand out sweets to passers by, all in the name of being kind. Year 5 will also be thinking about how to be kind around school and at home and the sense of happiness it gives to everyone involved. 

Oliver's Lucky Dollar

This morning Oliver Cummings came into school with a lucky object. Oliver explained that his sister brought the American one dollar note back from her travels for him. "She said it's a lucky dollar so it will make me lucky" said Oliver. Let's hope so Olly and thanks for sharing!
