Year 6 Maths Stars: Mastering the World of Angles!

Our Year 6 classrooms have been buzzing with mathematical precision! We’ve taken a deep dive into the world of geometry, moving from hands-on measuring to complex problem-solving.

We started by sharpening our practical skills. Using a protractor can be tricky - you have to line up the vertex perfectly and decide whether to use the inner or outer scale. The students have become experts at identifying:

• Acute Angles: Smaller than 90°.

• Obtuse Angles: Greater than 90° but less than 180°.

• Reflex Angles: The "big ones" that are greater than 180°.

Once we mastered the physical tools, we put the protractors away and turned on our "logic brains." We moved into calculating missing angles using our knowledge of geometric rules.

The students learned that they don't always need to measure if they know the "laws of the line." We've been practicing two key rules:

1. Angles on a straight line always sum to 180°.

2. Angles around a point always sum to 360°.

NSPCC Number Day – 6th February

On Friday 6th February, our school will be taking part in NSPCC Number Day, a fun-filled event that celebrates maths and a charity that focuses on helping to keep children safe.

This year, we’re turning up the volume and bringing the energy by becoming our Times Table Rockstars! Everyone is invited to dress as a Times Table Rockstar for the day. Think bright colours, funky outfits, sunglasses, wigs, or anything that gives off superstar vibes. Let your creativity shine! 

 

Throughout the day, children will take part in exciting maths activities and challenges. In addition, pupils will battle it out with other classes and even take on their teachers! We are looking forward to seeing who will come out victorious! We hope you will agree that this is a fantastic way to build confidence in maths while having loads of fun.

Number Day is not just about numbers - it’s about making a difference. By joining in, we’re supporting the NSPCC and helping them continue their vital work protecting children across the UK.  To support their important work, we are asking for a donation of £1 per family. Please send pupils in with their £1  to be handed to their teacher on the day. 

So, get your Rockstar outfit ready, warm up those times tables, and prepare to battle it out on TTRS. Let the best rocker win.

Ambitious Aims

Each week children will learn how to create their own puzzle books filled with spot the difference, crosswords, sudoku, word searches, rebus puzzles, codebreakers and mazes. Through designing and solving puzzles, they will build literacy skills such as spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Logic-based puzzles support numeracy, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Children will also develop creativity, focus and perseverance as they plan and refine their work. Each child will finish the term with a completed puzzle book they can be proud of. 🧩

Marvellous Magnolias !

 Over the past two weeks, the children in Magnolia have been learning about instruction texts. They looked at the features of an instruction text and which sets of instrutcions they thought inclued all the key features. They then went on to complete a shared write, where they wrote instructions on ' How to make a Pancake.' The children then independently planned and wrote their own set of instructions on, ' How to make a Jam Sandwich.' All children worked really hard on their instruction writing and on Friday put their instructions to good use and all made their own jam sandwhich.

In Maths this week, the children have been consolidating their learning and using all their arithmetic skills to complete different tasks. To end their unit of arithmetic, the children took their maths learning outside and went on a mathematical scavenger hunt. The children used their receprocity skills to work with different class mates and were very resilient in finding the correct answers.

Welcome to the Maths Challenge for year 5 and year 6.

This weeks challenge is all about perimeter.

Theme Park Architects in Year 6

 After a taxing week last week, Year 6 have been working in groups using their maths skills to create a Theme Park. 

They have had to budget and design the area for their theme park but most of all work successfully and collaboratively as a group.

We are so proud of the children and how they are working together. We're excited to see what they produce!

Daring to Divide Decimals in Year 5

Year 5 have been working hard to develop their decimal knowledge this week. 

We have been multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 & 1000. At times this has been difficult but we have been resilient  and have become more confident by the end of the week. 

We have learnt that if we multiply, the digits move to the left and increase in value. If we divide, they move to the right and decrease.

If you multiply or divide by 10 they move one place. If it is by 100 it is two places. 1000 is three places.

Year 6 - Exploring volume in Maths

 

In Year 6, the children have been calculating the volume of different 3 dimensional shapes.  They used multi-link cubes to as concrete objects to create shapes with a specific volume. 

The children had to be self-regulated learners by choosing the most appropriate method for them when calculating volume. As mathematicians they had to decide if it was time to use the formulae for the volume of shapes or better to count the cubes.

Nicole, Almond Class said: 'Volume is the amount of space a 3D shape takes up.'

Indianna, Oak Class, said 'making the shape with the cubes helped me to work out how many hidden cubes there actually were.'

We had a rockstar themes day on Monday where we came into school dressed as rockstars! We showed fantastic reciprocity by working together as a class to get up the leaderboard!
