Dynamic Diamond Nines in Year 6!

This week in Literacy, Year 6 have been reading the book 'Rooftoppers'.

The main characters we have been exploring are Sophie (the protagonist), Charles (her guardian), and Miss Eliot (the seemingly disapproving National Childcare Agency representative). Sophie and Charles have been informed that they are to be separated!

Year 6 had to be reflective and put ourselves in the shoes of Charles. Our upcoming task is to write a persuasive letter back to the agency to explain why this would not be a good choice to follow through.

In order to think of the most convincing arguments, Year 6 sorted some points in a Diamond 9.

"I don't think Sophie being able to climb up whenever she wants is a persuasive argument that Charles should use because he has taught her way more things!" - Chris

"Charles should definitely write about how he has given her cultural capital through Shakespeare and clsasical music." - Ollie H

Dazzling Description in Year 5

In Year 5, we have been discussing the poem The Highwayman.

Within The Highwayman there is some beautiful description of the setting and of the characters.

This week it is our turn to create a fantastic description based on this to then set us up for our narratives later on in the term.

Day 1 - The children created a word/phrase bank to help them. Children used collaboration and thesauruses to help with up level their ideas.

'His velvet red coat stood out like flowers in a graveyard' - Noah

'In the poorly lit night, the bright planet rose' - Thomas

On Day 2 the children used their word banks from the previous day to crate a descriptive piece. This will then help them when they come to write their longer narrative in the coming weeks.

'An unusual man was riding his noble steed, holding a pistol, which shined like a jewel yet to be discovered' - Madalina

'His red velvet coat was full of gold and thievery with a mask that hid the evil grin inside' - Layla

Year 6's Celebration Trip - Olympic Park

At Broadford we recognise the importance of an enriching curriculum both inside and outside of the classroom and have therefore planned an ‘experience entitlement’ that will serve to enrich the children’s learning on Friday 13th May. We will be visiting a major part of the London 2012 Olympic Games legacy - The Olympic Park, Stratford.

The children will have the opportunity to walk around and explore the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford. This will be a fantastic reward for all their hard work at the end of SATs week and will allow the children to celebrate the end of this experience

On Friday 13th May all children are expected at school on time, so that we can leave promptly at 9:00am. We will be travelling by bus and train and expect to arrive back at school by 3pm - we will ensure to keep parents updated on our whereabouts via the school's Facebook page.

Children are required to wear their school uniform (this can be their school PE kit); please ensure that all children wear appropriate footwear. Please also provide them with a spare change of clothes and a towel. We will be eating lunch at the Olympic Park so all children will need to take a packed lunch with them. Should your child require a lunch provided by the school, please indicate their preferences on the form below, log on to your sQuid account and follow the steps provided. All lunch orders must be completed by Tuesday 3rd May, so that we can process your order in time for your child’s trip. Alternatively, children can bring their own packed lunch in a carrier bag that is clearly labelled with their name and class.

Please complete this form by  Friday 6th May (unless you are ordering a school lunch). We cannot wait for a fun-packed day with the children!

Year 6 SATs Breakfast - W/C Monday 9th May

We would love to invite all of Year 6 to join us in school for breakfast at 8am on Monday - Thursday during SATs week (W/C 9th May).

We want to make sure that all the children feel fuelled and ready for the day, having eaten a healthy breakfast. It will also provide the children with an opportunity to socialise with their friends and teachers and hopefully calm their nerves before they sit their test papers.

The children have been working so hard to prepare for the assessments; hopefully this will be a wonderful way to start their mornings and make sure that they feel happy and ready to sit the assessments.

Terrible Tudors in Year 6 - 25.04.22

Year 6 have continued taking on their very own history project based on the Tudors. This project is child led and allows the children to take complete ownership of their learning.

We are so nearly at completion and the children spent this afternoon practising presenting their projects ready for the real presentation delivery day coming up in a few weeks.

The children were able to give and gain some constructive feedback in order to improve their delivery of their slideshows. This was a great way for the children to share their strengths and explain areas for development.

"I can't wait to explain to eveyone how I've become a true Historian and answered my own enquiry question" - Harry, Almond

"There is so much information out there, I feel like I could research the Tudors all day" - Katlyn, Lime

"I've decided to write a script so that I'm well prepared for delivering my presentation to the class" - Lily, Lime

Looking forward to presentation day!

Excellent Evaluating in Year 6!

Science this week in Year 6 has been evaluating our experiment: comparing rest and exercise heart rates.

The children found out that:

  • Exercise heart rate was higher than resting heart rate
  • Generally, people who have higher resting heart rates, also have higher exercise heart rates (the peaks coincide)
  • Children’s resting heart rates were between 50 - 90
  • Children’s exercise heart rates were between 85 - 120
  • The graph clearly shows that exercise does increase the heart rate

They then evaluated their experiment and thought of reliability, what makes a test fair, and how they could have improved their method of data collection. The children used excellent reflectiveness to relate back to their experiment and learning on reliability.

"We could have used an electronic heart rate monitor for more accurate readings of heart rate instead of finding the pulse." - Giada, Lime

"In order to control the different variables better, we could have done the exercise on a machine, like a treadmill or exercise bike, and set the effort to be consistent for the experiment." - Lily, Lime

The Highwayman in Year 5

To start the summer term Year 5 have been looking at the famous poem by Alfred Noyes, "The Highwayman"

The poem was written in 1906 so some of the vocabulary used has been challenging! The children were very resilient and have done a brilliant job of decoding what the poet was trying to portray.

To demonstrate this today the children acted out the poem, taking on the role of each character carefully and ensuring their emotions were conveyed through their actions.

" I really liked acting out the poem and being different characters." Kayden, Maple

" I enjoyed seeing the poem come to life." Lily, Maple

Next week the children will be writing their own versions of the poem. We look forward to reading their interpretations.

Perceptive Predictions in Year 6!

Year 6 have started their Summer term off wonderfully in Literacy, where they have been introduced to their new book "Rooftoppers" by Katherine Rundell.

In the first chapter, they learned that a baby girl - who was found abandoned in a cello case - has been taken into the care of a scholar (Charles). They are quite the unexpected pairing, but Charles is determined to be her ward and help raise her.

In groups, the children discussed what they thought of the first chapter and made predictions as to what might happen next.

They were effective in showing reciprocity by taking turns during the discussion and were very resourceful by making links to different parts of the chapter and other books they had read.

"I think that Sophie is going to become a cello player, because she was found in a cello case." Frankie P, Almond

"I believe Sophie has come from France, as she was found in the English Channel," Malachi, Lime

The children are already excited to read what will happen next - we cannot wait to see the writing they produce relating to this story!

This is the book we are reading:
