This week, Year 6 became scientists as they investigated how the human body transports vital water and nutrients to stay healthy and strong. To understand this complex internal process, the pupils rolled up their sleeves and created a brilliant hands-on model of the human digestive system.
The experiment began with the mouth and stomach. The children used a fork to vigorously break up food particles, simulating the mechanical digestion that happens when we chew. They added a splash of water to the mixture, beautifully demonstrating how saliva and stomach fluids help to dissolve and transport food down the digestive tract.
Next, the pupils explored how the body separates the good stuff from the waste. They carefully poured their crushed food mixture into a pair of tights. In this clever model, the tights represented the small and large intestines.
The real magic happened when the children squeezed the tights over a plate. As they applied pressure, water and nutrients seeped through the tiny gaps in the fabric and collected on the plate below.
This perfectly demonstrated how the walls of the small and large intestines allow essential nutrients and water to absorb through into the bloodstream, leaving the solid waste behind. It was a fantastic—and wonderfully messy—way to see human biology in action!
Year 6 Visit the Olympic Park
To celebrate the completion of their SATs, the children were rewarded with a trip to Stratford to go to the Olympic Park. The children spent the morning running around, playing in the sand and climbing on all of the obstacles that were available to them. It was wonderful to see the children showing excellent reciprocity and supporting one another on the equipment.
After lunch in the sunshine, we walked to Stratford's 'Splash Park' where the children thoroughly enjoyed playing in the fountains together.We were so proud of how well-behaved the children were on the trip representing Broadford Primary School!

Our Year 6 classrooms have been buzzing with mathematical precision! We’ve taken a deep dive into the world of geometry, moving from hands-on measuring to complex problem-solving.
We started by sharpening our practical skills. Using a protractor can be tricky - you have to line up the vertex perfectly and decide whether to use the inner or outer scale. The students have become experts at identifying:
Acute Angles: Smaller than 90°.
Reflex Angles: The "big ones" that are greater than 180°.
Once we mastered the physical tools, we put the protractors away and turned on our "logic brains." We moved into calculating missing angles using our knowledge of geometric rules.
The students learned that they don't always need to measure if they know the "laws of the line." We've been practicing two key rules:
Angles on a straight line always sum to 180°.
Angles around a point always sum to 360°.

This half-term, our budding scientists are diving deep into the circulatory system! We kicked things off this week by getting hands-on with the body's most tireless engine: the heart.
To understand how this incredible organ functions, our pupils didn't just look at diagrams — they became engineers.
Using modelling dough we sculpted hearts, carefully layering the chambers and rolling out dough "tubes" to represent the vital entrance and exit points for blood flow.To see the mechanics in action, we transformed everyday items into a working cardiovascular model:
The Jar: Our "Heart" filled with red-tinted water (blood). The Balloon: Acting as the strong "Muscle Walls." The Straws: The "Blood Vessels" that transport life-giving fluid. By sealing one "valve" and pushing down on the balloon, pupils witnessed exactly how pressure forces blood out of the heart and through the body. It was a messy, marvellous way to see biology in motion!
