Unforgettable Visitors & Hands-On Learning in Year 5!

Year 5 has had an incredible week packed with enriching visits that brought our learning to life!

Here is a look at the inspiring workshops and visitors that joined us this week:

• Drama & Personal Development with the 'Habbit Factory': Every Monday, the Habbit Factory is running a 45-minute workshop closely tied to our PSHE curriculum. Through small drama activities, the children are building their self-esteem, growing their confidence, and sharpening their speaking skills.

• Building Resilience with 'Drama Geezers': On Wednesday, our whole school took part in an interactive adventure with 'Drama Geezers' focused on resilience—one of our core 4Rs! Each year group contributed their own creative ideas and performed alongside the 'Geezers' to write a chapter of a book. The finished book will be printed and shared in every classroom!

• Fire Safety with the London Fire Brigade: To wrap up the week, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) dropped by for an essential, educational talk on fire safety, giving the children vital knowledge to keep themselves and others safe.

What a fantastic start to the new academic year! Our Year 5 children have settled in brilliantly, bringing wonderful energy and enthusiasm into the classroom every day.

Year 5 Master Roman Numerals and Place Value!

It has already been a remarkably busy week, and the children are thriving. In Maths, they dived straight into revisiting Roman numerals and place value, showing great determination and focus. Hands-on learning has been at the heart of our lessons, with everyone using practical equipment to build, represent, and deepen their understanding of larger numbers.

                          Loving Literacy:

In literacy, we are reading 'The Hacker' and currently looking at a diary entry from the perspective of Vicky who has been accused of cheating in a maths exam.  However, what has made her situation worse, is that her dad has been arrested for a £1,000,000 fraud!  We are focusing on Vicky's innermost thoughts and feelings and her dilemma.

We are incredibly proud of how quickly Year 5 have adapted to their new routines and set such a positive tone for the term ahead. Keep up the amazing work!

Year 6 Science: The Journey of Digestion and The Circulatory System

Year 6 Science: The Journey of Digestion

This week, Year 6 became scientists as they investigated how the human body transports vital water and nutrients to stay healthy and strong. To understand this complex internal process, the pupils rolled up their sleeves and created a brilliant hands-on model of the human digestive system.

Step 1: Breaking It Down

The experiment began with the mouth and stomach. The children used a fork to vigorously break up food particles, simulating the mechanical digestion that happens when we chew. They added a splash of water to the mixture, beautifully demonstrating how saliva and stomach fluids help to dissolve and transport food down the digestive tract.

Step 2: Entering the Intestines

Next, the pupils explored how the body separates the good stuff from the waste. They carefully poured their crushed food mixture into a pair of tights. In this clever model, the tights represented the small and large intestines.

Step 3: Absorbing into the Bloodstream

The real magic happened when the children squeezed the tights over a plate. As they applied pressure, water and nutrients seeped through the tiny gaps in the fabric and collected on the plate below.

This perfectly demonstrated how the walls of the small and large intestines allow essential nutrients and water to absorb through into the bloodstream, leaving the solid waste behind. It was a fantastic—and wonderfully messy—way to see human biology in action!

Year 6 Science: The Circulatory System

Finally, to complete our Science unit, we discussed systems within the body.  We then made a matching card game to help us identify and name each part of the circulatory system.

We cut out the cards, shuffled them and challenged each other to match them up.

Year 6 Celebrate at the Olympic Park

Year 6 Visit the Olympic Park

To celebrate the completion of their SATs, the children were rewarded with a trip to Stratford to go to the Olympic Park. The children spent the morning running around, playing in the sand and climbing on all of the obstacles that were available to them. It was wonderful to see the children showing excellent reciprocity and supporting one another on the equipment. 

After lunch in the sunshine, we walked to Stratford's 'Splash Park' where the children thoroughly enjoyed playing in the fountains together.

We were so proud of how well-behaved the children were on the trip representing Broadford Primary School! 

A big thank you to all of our volunteers and, again, a massive well done to our Year 6 pupils for their hard work- we are so proud of you all!

Year 6 Maths Stars: Mastering the World of Angles!

Our Year 6 classrooms have been buzzing with mathematical precision! We’ve taken a deep dive into the world of geometry, moving from hands-on measuring to complex problem-solving.

We started by sharpening our practical skills. Using a protractor can be tricky - you have to line up the vertex perfectly and decide whether to use the inner or outer scale. The students have become experts at identifying:

• Acute Angles: Smaller than 90°.

• Obtuse Angles: Greater than 90° but less than 180°.

• Reflex Angles: The "big ones" that are greater than 180°.

Once we mastered the physical tools, we put the protractors away and turned on our "logic brains." We moved into calculating missing angles using our knowledge of geometric rules.

The students learned that they don't always need to measure if they know the "laws of the line." We've been practicing two key rules:

1. Angles on a straight line always sum to 180°.

2. Angles around a point always sum to 360°.

Year 6 Pump it Up: Modelling the Human Heart! 🫀

This half-term, our budding scientists are diving deep into the circulatory system! We kicked things off this week by getting hands-on with the body's most tireless engine: the heart.

To understand how this incredible organ functions, our pupils didn't just look at diagrams — they became engineers.

Using modelling dough we sculpted hearts, carefully layering the chambers and rolling out dough "tubes" to represent the vital entrance and exit points for blood flow.

To see the mechanics in action, we transformed everyday items into a working cardiovascular model:

The Jar: Our "Heart" filled with red-tinted water (blood). The Balloon: Acting as the strong "Muscle Walls." The Straws: The "Blood Vessels" that transport life-giving fluid.  By sealing one "valve" and pushing down on the balloon, pupils witnessed exactly how pressure forces blood out of the heart and through the body. It was a messy, marvellous way to see biology in motion!
