 In Year 5 we had the opportunity to visit the Science Museum on Tuesday. It was an exciting moment for the year group when we got to ride the District Line all the way into South Kensington. 

As a year group we got to enjoy the Space Gallery which ties into our Science topic.

We were excited when we got to try on astronaut gloves and try and pick things up with them. 

Most would agree the best part of the day was when we got to attend a Wonder Lab session. We got to see how sound vibrates with a speaker and some flames as well as a chemical change when Angie from Redwood got chosen to be a volunteer.

As a year group we had to demonstrate one of our 4 Rs which was Reciprocity by taking turns and sharing knowledge when we learned something new and wanted to share.

Year 6 Trip - Science Museum

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Year 6 children on Wednesday 9th March. We will be visiting the Science Museum to complement the children's learning in Science and to celebrate British Science Week 2022, which takes place the following week. 

On Wednesday 9th March all children are expected at school on time, so that we can leave promptly at 9:00am. We will be travelling by bus and train and expect to arrive back at school by 3pm - we will ensure to keep parents updated on our whereabouts via the school's Facebook page. 

Children are required to wear school uniform; please ensure that all children wear appropriate footwear and have a waterproof coat. We will be eating lunch at the museum, so all children will need to take a packed lunch with them. Should your child require a lunch provided by the school, please indicate their preferences on the form below, log on to your sQuid account and follow the steps provided. All lunch orders must be completed by Wednesday 2nd March, so that we can process your order in time for your child’s trip. Alternatively, children can bring their own packed lunch in a carrier bag that is clearly labelled with their name and class.

We would really appreciate some parent volunteers to help out on the day. Please register your interest on the form, if you would like to accompany your child's class on the trip.

Please complete this permission form by Wednesday 2nd March. We cannot wait for the children to explore one of London's finest museums!

Film Festival Trip - Key Stage 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

**Please complete this permission form for a trip to the cinema in Ilford on Thursday 18th November.**

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Key Stage 2 children. In celebration of the Into Film Festival, the children will be attending a viewing of ‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway' at Cineworld in Ilford. All of Key Stage 2 will be in attendance and we will have the screen completely to ourselves.

On Thursday 18th November, all children should be in school by 8.30am as we will be leaving promptly at 8:45am. We will be travelling by bus and train and expect to arrive back at school for 1:00pm.

We will need some parent volunteers to help out on the day. Please register your interest on the form, if you would like to accompany your child's class on the trip. Please note that parent volunteers will be chosen on a first come, first served basis, as we have a limited number of cinema tickets available.

The children will eat lunch at school once we have returned from the cinema. In case we are back late that day, all children will eat a packed lunch (provided by school or home). We are extremely fortunate to not only have received these tickets free of charge in celebration of the annual Into Film Festival, but to also have the whole screen to ourselves. We cannot wait to enjoy this fun day out with all the children in Key Stage 2!

Year 5 Virtual reality experience

Yesterday, Year 5 students had a virtual reality workshop as part of our topic on Ancient Egypt. During the session each pupil had the opportunity to wear the virtual reality headset to experience and travel to an Ancient Egyptian landscape.


The children ventured into pyramids, explored tombs and spotted an ornate sarcophagus all from the comfort of a Year 5 classroom. This virtual reality experience complimented the work we have been doing on Ancient Egyptian beliefs and mummification and consolidates our study in the British Museum on Monday.


Sydney from Elm said, "I really enjoyed the VR experience. The sarcophagus I saw was just like the one we made in class. When you looked into the pyramid, it felt like you were going to fall into it!"

Year 5

Year 5 British Museum Visit

Yesterday, Year 5 visited the British Museum as part of our topic work on the Ancient Egyptians. Firstly, we attended a presentation about the evolution of mummification and how the process differed according to the wealth and status of the person being mummified.

We discovered that the British Museum has not unwrapped any of the mummies in its collection, but rather used technology such as CAT scanners to look inside the ancient tombs. 

Following this, year 5 students were accompanied in small groups to view the Ancient Egyptian exhibit which spanned six rooms in the museum. The children completed different tasks in each room such as locating different artifacts and suggesting what they might be used for. They used their reciprocity skills to work together and identify the objects. 

Overall, this was a very successful trip and effectively consolidated our work on ancient Egyptians. 

Mathew said, "I enjoyed learning about the sand-dried mummies."
Nathan said, "I enjoyed looking at the old jewelry that the pharaohs wore." 

Year 5 

Year 6 London Symphony Orchestra Trip

We believe in providing opportunities for pupils that widens their experiences.   Year 6 pupils were fortunate enough to be invited to an interactive interpretation of 'The Voyager' by the London Symphony Orchestra at The Barbican Centre in London.

Classical music and musicians may not play a heavy part in an average day for a 10/11 year old, so it was fascinating to see their amazement at the variety of instruments, the intricate conducting and the impressive collaboration the musicians demonstrated. Unfortunately, we were not able to take photos inside as there are strict rules in place at the Barbican.

My favourite instrument was the double bass because it sounded so magical and calming.

I had a brilliant day! It has really inspired me to play an instrument. Maybe I should take up the violin!

We listened to the orchestra and observed how they changed pitch and tempo as well as participated in using hand signals to complement the mood of the music. We also sang 'The Voyager' to the tune of 'I vow to thee my country' by Gustav Holst which we have been learning in class!

The children had a brilliant day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and consider themselves extremely fortunate to enjoy such a special day out.

Year 6 Junior Citizenship Trip

Today, the Year 6 pupils attended the Junior Citizenship experience and met people from the police, the London Fire Brigade, Havering Safer Transport, Transport for London and many others. The pupils were put into groups and visited different scenarios hosted by various agencies on a carousel. 

We met the Royal Lifeboat Rescue Service and the man explained to us about the dangers of currents
and tides when in the water. We learned that we should never enter water alone and that if we are struggling, we should try and stay still with our arms up in the air and shout 'help' as loudly as possible.

Representatives from litter enforcement were present today to ensure that pupils were aware of the terrible effects of rubbish on animals. 80% of children in our year group stated that they had seen the effects of litter on local wildlife. 

We were very lucky to hear all about how to stay safe while travelling, an important thing to remember as our pupils move up to secondary school. Transport for London brought along a bus so the children could rehearse safely waiting on the side of the road and using their zip cards. They also discovered how to stay safe on buses and what to do if they ever see an unattended bag. 

It was good to learn that when waiting for a bus you should wait far behind the bus stop. The ideal guideline is your height and a step back! If you fall into the road, you could be seriously hurt so it is not worth taking the risk.

You must check your smoke alarm once a week at home and change the battery once a year. If there is a fire, you should stay as low as possible because smoke rises.

The teams collected points for behaviour, listening skills and retention of knowledge and all scored at least 87 points out of a possible 90. 

Overall, a fantastic trip which allowed our children to learn life skills and to experience real-life situations which may arise in the future. 

Running 1000 Miles to Freedom

Last week, Year 6 were lucky enough to visit the Museum of London Docklands to become further immersed in their history topic 'Why should the world be ashamed of slavery?'. 

The children were excited to listen to the story of Ellen Craft, a woman born into slavery in America in the 1820s who later escaped under the disguise of being a man, with her husband (fellow slave William Craft). Between them, they became the most famous fugitive slaves due to their courageous and elaborate escape plan. 

The pupils were then able to explore the exhibition and study letters, artefacts and other historical information to deepen their learning and enhance what we have done in class. 

Although we have learnt about the abominable slave trade in class, it was fascinating to hear a first-hand account of a former slave who managed to escape and find a better life in England.

This topic has been an extremely interesting challenge for the pupils but has allowed us to explore and debate concepts of freedom, equality and justice as well as hone our skills as historians. The children truly understand why we cannot ever allow this point in history to repeat itself again.

Redwood make pizza!

Today, Redwood visited Pizza Express to learn what it takes to make a pizza from scratch. To bring our topic of Italy to life, our children visited the restaurant chain and were given an opportunity to partake in the whole process of making a pizza. First they rolled out the dough, tossed it and shaped it to create the base. Next was the adding of the tomato base and finally they topped their pizzas with mozzarella cheese. Back at school, they had a 'pizza party' in class and ate their delicious creations!

Making pizza was really fun and not something I would usually do. My favourite part was tossing the dough into the air- you had to be so careful not to drop it!

Larch make pizza!

Yesterday afternoon Larch class visited Pizza Express in Upminster to create their very own pizza. The children learnt all about the ingredients used to make the dough and toppings and the different places they come from. As our topic is Italy this half term, this was a wonderful opportunity to immerse the children into this wonderful country. 

I loved making my pizza. It was so delicious but I want to save some for my family.

Go wild in Kidzania

This week Year 5 hit the city of Kidzania! To begin, the children followed footsteps which eventually lead  them to a departure lounge, where they were greeted with wristbands, money and hair nets (required for health and safety).

The children were then set free to explore the city, where they could take on new jobs and earn even more money. They then had the option to spend their money, open a bank account or continue to save.

We had children becoming fire fighters, vets, doctors and some children even attended university! For their hard work, the children earned numerous rewards, from pet food to chocolate tokens!

Whilst on the trip, the children were incredibly sensible and showed everyone what a lovely year group they are! 

I wonder if the children have any ideas on what they want to become when they are older now...

Year 6 Hampton Court Palace

Today's trip to Hampton Court Palace gave our Year 6 children a wonderful opportunity to explore and investigate life in another era and to put their historical skills to the test.

We visited the Great Hall of Henry VIII, the famous kitchens where it is said over 600 people worked at one point and the newer part built by King William III. The children participated in a fun and educational workshop which allowed the children to investigate the reliability of sources and the importance of remaining unbiased when enquiring historically. Luckily, on hand to help us out was Lady Beth (a member of the Tudor household)! 

Alfie, Redwood class said "I found it incredible to think that 500 years ago, King Henry the VIII and his wives would have sat in this hall to feast or would have strolled down the arched walkways!" 

We all had a fantastic time and the day enriched the children's understanding of our Topic. A big thank you to our school and parent helpers- Miss Hall and Mrs Peppit!

It was good to learn that on a train platform, you must stay back from the yellow line. The ideal guideline is your height and a step back! If you fall onto the tracks, you could become paralysed from the high voltage so it is not worth taking the risk.

To finish off a brilliant day, on the way home, the children made the school proud by helping someone in need by carrying shopping up the stairs at Gidea Park. Well done!

Year 6 Olympic Park Trip

After a week of exams, Year 6 were rewarded with a trip to the Olympic Park in Stratford. The weather was a bit grim but it didn't matter too much as the children got soaked running in and out of the water fountains anyway! As well as having fun with water, the pupils also played football, games and explored the impressive climbing structures. It was a fantastic day out and well-deserved for the children's hard work and effort. 

I really liked the water fountains because I enjoyed being with all my friends and experiencing something new!
