Year 5 multiplication tarsia puzzles

Yesterday, the children in Miss Chau's maths set were applying their multiplication knowledge to 3 different levels of tarsia challenge. 

Harry Vincent, Elm, said 'I find the tarsias challenging but fun because we have to work out the answers to each multiplication sum before we can put the puzzle together'. 

Natalie Towner, Elm, added that 'Creating my own tarsia puzzle was enjoyable because I had to think up my own questions as well as checking that the answers were correct'. 

The children demonstrated impressive levels of resourcefulness by developing their reasoning skills by working out answers methodically and they also sought out connections between the different jigsaw pieces. 

Elm investigate the presence of starch in food products

Yesterday afternoon, Elm class carried out experiments to find which food products contain starch and are therefore plant products. If a product contained starch then the food turned black when iodine was added. 

Leo Mbata stated that 'If the food turned black then we knew that it contained starch and was a plant product. We then knew that photosynthesis had occurred because starch is a type of glucose, produced in a plant when photosynthesis has taken place'. 

The children enjoyed comparing their predictions to the actual results and discovered that bread contained the most starch as it turned the darkest and drumstick lollipops did not contain any starch at all. 

Elm: Count on Us

This afternoon, Elm have been getting busy with 'Count on Us' activities this afternoon. The children are in training for the annual Count on Us school competition and have demonstrated healthy competitiveness and reciprocity so far. The activities include: tan gram, pentominoes and 24. Charlie says 'I enjoy pentominoes because it's always a challenge and it's really fun!"

Jessica's Learning Challenge

This morning in Elm class, Jessica Sampson brought in her learning challenge which she has been completing at home. Jessica attempted two the challenges and we look forward to seeing what she and the other children will bring in this term after the new challenge has been sent home. Well done Jessica!

Elm edit their writing

Having spent the last few weeks writing their next episode of the Mai-long saga, the children in Elm class are now sharing and editing their work with their partner. The reflectiveness and reciprocity is evident as the children work hard together to make their writing even more exciting! 

Year 5 refresh Roman Numerals

This morning, children in Miss Chau's maths set refreshed their Roman numerals with different activities using a pack of cards. The children will be able to read, write and recognise numbers and numerals up to 1000 by the end of the topic. 

Brandon's Learning Challenge

Brandon Brown from Elm class has been busy at home completing parts of his Learning Challenge. He  searched for the deeper meaning of the poem 'Caged Bird' and produced some very thought-provoking ideas. Well done Brandon!

Home Learning in Elm class

Over the last week, children in Elm class have been busy completing their own learning linked to Art, Topic and Literacy. Here you can see a selection of creative work from Jessica, Ronnie, Georgia, Elizabeth and Charlie. 

Elm sort out relative clauses

Today the children are learning about relative clauses and are completing a practical activity to help consolidate what they have learnt so far. 

The children had to match the correct relative pronoun and relative clause to different openers linked to our story 'Dragon-Slayer'.
