Circles

In Numeracy this week, Year 6 were illustrating and naming parts of a circle. We looked at the relationship between the diameter and radius and learnt about how the diameter is twice the radius. The radius is the distance  room the centre of the circle to the perimeter (circumference). The children had to accurately draw  circles with a set radius, semi circles, quarter circles and concentric circles.

Translation

This morning, Mrs Gradley's group were drawing and translating shapes on the first quadrant and four quadrants of the co-ordinate grid. The children used vectors to show the movement of a vertex, left, right, up or down.
In class, the children had a choice of activities to complete. Some used the my maths app and worked through the lesson and worksheet; others completed chilli challenge tasks and mastery challenges.

Calculating Perimeter

In today's session, the children were using their perimeter formula to calculate the perimeter of compound shapes. Afterwards the children completed a selection of worded area and perimeter questions exploring the relationship between area and perimeter.

Calculating Area

This week Mrs Gradley's numeracy group have been calculating the area of compound shapes. The children are able to use formulae to work out the answer. Firstly we watched a video of a surveyor who in his every day life needs to be able to calculate area to complete his job. Afterwards the children used their calculation skills to complete multi-step word problems .

Maple Make Smoothies

To follow on from the fantastic BMX display that they saw in the morning, Maple made some delicious fruit smoothies yesterday...but in a very unusual way. Mrs Nicholls borrowed a very special bike which enabled the blades of a blender to rotate as the rider pedalled on the bike. With some team work and a wary Miss R and Mrs Stallard holding the lid of the blender, just in case, Maple created a scrumptious smoothie sensation! Yummy!

Maple Seek A Solution

Today in Science the children in Maple class investigated which materials when mixed with water created a solution. They tested sugar, salt, wax, sand, coffee, flour, chalk, oil and clay. Then using filter paper , they attempted to separate the material from the water.

Name That Symmetry

Did you know that there are several different types of symmetry? Did you also know that symmetry and symmetrical patterns can be found all around us, even in nature! That's exactly what our Year 5s were searching for today. Together with Mrs Stallard, Miss Munday and Miss Reynolds, they teamed up to find different types of symmetry around our school. This was following on from thismweek's learning about line, reflective and rotational symmetry. "I didn't know there were things with rotational symmetry in our school!" said Matthew. Luis exclaimed "it's so clever that things in nature are symmetrical!" Our clever children even found some items with more than one type of symmetry. Great investigating, Year 5!
