Year 5&6 Road Safety

This afternoon Year 5 and 6 had the opportunity to watch a play and take part in a workshop about road safety. The plot of the play surrounded two cousins, who both put bicycles on their Christmas list. Their parents ensured the children were well equipped with all the safety gear. They were taught to stop, look and listen. However, one day when the cousins were out and the rain was pouring heavily they decide they need to get home quickly. One of the cousins chose to run across a busy A road and taunted his cousin to do the same. Giving into persuasion the cousin ran across the busy road ending in tragedy.

Following this powerful play the children had the opportunity to discuss the importance of standing up for what they believe is right and how it is important to use their voices to make their chooses clear. A strong message resonated through the hall as the children shared different ways the character could have avoided giving into peer pressure and stood up for the chooses they wanted to make. These conversations required the children to reflect upon how making their voices heard can be exceptionally powerful.

Year 6 Dogs Trust Workshop

This afternoon, Year 6 were visited by Maria from the Dogs Trust who came in to speak to the children about safe dog ownership and how to handle dogs in public. We discovered now we can stay safe with strange dogs and that if a dog jumps up we should stay still and be quiet, cross our arms and look up at the sky rather than at the dog. 

We discussed all the different reasons why dogs go to bed apart from feeling tired. When they take themselves to bed, we should leave them alone as they might need some alone time.

It was useful to learn how dogs may react when they are scared or worried. They can't speak so it's important to look out for the signs.

CSI Road Safety Performance

This afternoon, Year 6 were visited by a road safety performance group who turned the hall into a crime scene. Unfortunately, a teenage boy had been knocked over by a car, and crime scene investigators asked the children to work out whose fault it was and how the accident could have been avoided. Using clues which had been left and testimonies from witnesses, the children enjoyed unraveling what really happened. 

The accident could have been avoided if people had made different choices. The driver shouldn't have been distracted by her baby and the teenage boy should have looked before he crossed the road and not been on his phone. Accidents can be avoided!

Y6 Help Miles the Mole

This afternoon, Year 6 were visited by 'Theatre in Education' who introduced Miles the Mole to the pupils. The performance explained the importance of caring for our environment and how we can reduce air pollution and improve the quality of the air. 

We need to be wary of certain gases in the atmosphere, such as nitrogen dioxide as they cause pollution and are harmful for our breathing.

Luckily, there are ways to reduce the amount of air pollution- such as walking as much as possible and reducing the amount of car journeys you take. 

70% of all air pollution comes from traffic! We were surprised that traffic is even worse than factories and aeroplanes, simply because there is just so much of it.

A Visitor in Year 6

On Friday, the Year 6 pupils will welcome a special visitor who is coming to speak to them about how making the right choices in life can determine their future. 

Former model, Susie Flashman-Jarvis, wrote an autobiography explaining how she left behind a troubled and turbulent life and discovered who she could really be with the right guidance and support. 

Ms Flashman-Jarvis has kindly agreed- in conjunction with Rev Rich- to share her story with our pupils in order to make a positive impact on their own life choices.

PC Wayne's Internet Safety Advice

This afternoon, Year 6 were lucky enough to be paid a visit by PC Wayne to participate in an Internet Safety talk to learn about how we can stay safe whilst using our electronic devices online. Did you know that social media accounts should not be used by anyone under the age of 13? The key messages from the talk were: being sensible on our social media accounts if we do have one; ensuring that we do not share any personal information over the Internet such as our addresses and phone numbers and being aware of stranger danger! 

I didn't know that children under 13 shouldn't actually have social media accounts. Now I understand why, I will take greater care when using the Internet!

The Internet can be incredibly useful for staying in touch with friends and doing research but PC Wayne reminded us all that the Internet can also be a dangerous place for children and so we need to ensure children stay safe and alert when online.

The Hobbit performance

This morning the school is watching a performance of J.R Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. Year 5 are thoroughly enjoying this performance and will surely make interesting comparisons between this staging and the films. 

Elm read to Theo part 2

Theo, the beautiful weinreimer, visited us again this afternoon to listen to children read. 

CSI Palm

A serious crime occurred at Broadford Primary School and it was up to the pupils to solve the mystery!

The school dinner money had been stolen from the kitchen and 4 suspects were to be investigated: Mr Drakes, Mr Martin, Mandy and Mrs Nichols. Using forensic science the children had to examine the evidence and decide who committed the crime and should be arrested!

On Monday morning Elm and Maple were visited by a member of London Fire Brigade who gave us a talk about fire safety. The children paid very good attention to all the tips and guidance given and put their knowledge of the fire triangle to good use!

Elm read to Theo

This afternoon, some children from Elm class got the chance to read to Theo, the weinreimer. The children thoroughly enjoyed his visit and he will be back the Tuesday after next to catch up with the other half of the class! 

Home Crime Prevention Task

Our local Police Officer, PC Wayne Hopkins, came to visit Year 6 today. Speaking to the children about a wider initiative to reduce burglaries in the area. The children took part in a class discussion on how they could do things around the home to reduce the chance of being burgled. They were then given a home school task to complete. It's important to remember, Don't be scared, be practical!
