Year 6 PE

This week in PE Year 6 were challenged to use their reciprocity skills to make the name of their class. 

Working together, Palm and Acer children decided which children would make each letter of their class name and laid strategically on the floor of the hall for Miss Cook and Mr Potway to take a photo.

"We had to organise eachother and listen to one another, which was quite tricky at first," said Vinnie, Palm.

Year 6 Fabulous Fraction

This morning, Year 6 have been busy solving problems with their mathematical knowledge. For the past week they have been learning how to find equivalent fractions and simplify them. The task involved the children using their knowledge of times tables facts to find common multiples of their numerator and denominator to see if the fractions could be simplified and then matched. 

This morning Santana and Kynan separately managed to match fractions to find equivalents. They both employed different methods to approach their problem: Kynan lined up the possibilities then ruled them out, but Santana worked out individual fractions and then matched them. "I never realised that times tables were so important to fractions!" Said Santana. 

Other children took on the challenge of tarsia puzzles. They found it challenging to match individual fractions and also create the pyramid required to complete the puzzle. "I keep having to move triangles around and check my answers," stated Sian. 

The children exercised excellent reciprocity and resilience this morning. Great job, Year 6! 

Sky Academy Children have set off!

The year 3, 5 and 6 children that are off on their way to the sky academy have set off. Today they will be taking part in filming two television programmes. Please keep your eye on the blog for more photo and time updates.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Come one, come all, to Broadford's annual coffee morning! We will be holding our annual Macmillan Coffee morning this Friday, 25th September, in the new hall at 9.15am. Feel free to bring your little ones as we have plenty of year 6s to keep them entertained. With cups of tea, coffee and delicious cake starting at just 50p, it's a great chance to have a catch up while raising money for a great cause. Of course, our Year 6s will be hosting the entire event, so please come down if you can. 

Acer Sharing Assembly

Calling all parents, carers, friends, aunts, uncles and grandparents of Acer children! Tomorrow is their sharing assembly! Please come along and join in the celebration of their work at 9.05am in the new hall. 

Year 5/6 girls School Nurse talk

Year 5/6 girls are currently having their talk with the school nurse. They are talking about the next stages of their physical development. 

The girls and their mums are talking about periods, body changes, and keeping clean and healthy.

Year 6 girls: Nurse visit

On Tuesday 15th September at 9am the year 6 girls will be visited by the school nurse, who will be giving them information about body changes, puberty, periods and answering questions about a whole range of topics relevant to our girls in this stage of their physical development. Parents are welcome to join the girls on Tuesday. We will not need notice of you coming, but please feel free to come and join them on Tuesday for the nurse session. 

We are looking into arranging something similar for the boys in the near future. 

Palm are on their way home

Palm have boarded the coach and are on their way home, our ETA is in around 2 hours- between 4pm and 4.15pm 

Year 6 Palm Sky Academy update

Palm have been asked to stay for a further half an hour to act as a rehearsal audience for a show called Game Changers. This exciting change means we will board the coach around 2pm and be back between 3.30pm and 4pm. Keep your eye on the blog for updates. 

Currently, the children are preparing their script and in the wardrobe department preparing for their report. 

Palm are off!

Palm are off on their trip! We had a very early start and managed to make it onto the coach for 7.45. More updates later.

Maple Make Smoothies

To follow on from the fantastic BMX display that they saw in the morning, Maple made some delicious fruit smoothies yesterday...but in a very unusual way. Mrs Nicholls borrowed a very special bike which enabled the blades of a blender to rotate as the rider pedalled on the bike. With some team work and a wary Miss R and Mrs Stallard holding the lid of the blender, just in case, Maple created a scrumptious smoothie sensation! Yummy! 

Perfect Penmanship

Congratulations to our Year 5 children that have earned their handwriting pens today. Our year 5s are the first cohort to earn their prized handwriting pens, which they have to treasure and look after. They have earned them for their exceptional handwriting and presentation in all areas of their class work! Great job guys, keep it up! 

Year 5 Investigate Thixotropic Substances

Maple have been busy being scientists this afternoon asking questions about solids and liquids. What if something like a gel, toothpaste or sand has a mixture of solid and liquid properties? This is when a substance is called Thixotropic and Maple made their very own substance today. "It looked like a solid but when I moved it, it moved like a liquid," said Drew. 

How could we use this kind of substance in every day life? 

Year 5 Drapers Academy Visit

Yesterday, Year 5 were invited to Drapers Academy to take part in a taster afternoon. They had a theme of "Cupcakes" that was the inspiration for a drama and a cookery class. Have a look at what they got up to...

Year 5 conduct a diffusion experiment

On Tuesday afternoon, Year 5 conducted an experiment testing how quickly gases diffuse through the air. The children realised that there were too many variables to control which in fact made the test unfair and rendered the results and data as invalid. 

Year 5 fractions

Year 5 have been busy this morning working out fractions of amounts. Miss R took the children out onto the playground to do some super calculating using some chalk and the playground itself. The children displayed brilliant independence in following the steps of learning to come to their answer. Good job year 5! 

Year 5 Learning Challenge Summer 2

We are delighted to provide you with the Year 5 Learning Challenge for this half of the Summer Term.You will notice that the activities are split into Basic, Advanced and Deep Learning. This is a way for us to look at learning at Broadford, and is designed to ensure that children not only acquire factual knowledge but also gain a further understanding about how their new skills or knowledge can be applied to their own lives or be used to further their cognitive and social development.
