What a joy it was to spend time reading together in weather conditions that were just right!
The children read to each other and to the adults present, with some parents sharing their favourite childhood stories and authors!
We created short stories using four random words and some groups had the opportunity to share.
In conclusion, we recited this half term's poem - 'Hands on the Bridge' by Michael Rosen.
Our hope is for all of the children to cultivate a love for reading that will last a lifetime!

The UK Festival season started this month, so we are joining in with a Year 5 Reading Festival! Weather permitting, this will be held on our lovely school field.
Please bring a blanket, a light healthy snack and your favourite childhood stories to read and enjoy with your child and some members of their class.
Festival accessories (e.g. Face gems, hats and other hair accessories) are welcome!

The Year 5 Team
This half term of learning about WWII, through the lens of the characters in Letters from the Lighthouse, comes to a close.
The children were engulfed by the fact that this was once a reality for children their age and this week, they had the opportunity to write a diary entry from the perspective of a child being sent away to 'safety' during the war.
Our Year 5's used literary skills such as first person, adverbials of time and place and were intentional that the detail and tone of their writing matched both the diary style and their character.

Year 5 Toy Story Cinema Trip - 26.06.06
We are pleased to inform you that on Wednesday, 24th June 2026, the children who are not attending the Mersea residential will be going to Lumiere Cinema, Romford, where they will be able to enjoy a private screening of Toy Story 5. Please complete the permission form by 15/06/2026 so that lunches can be ordered in time.

Our Year 5 Scientists have really enjoyed getting hands on in this term's unit: Reversible and Irreversible Changes.
They discussed and tested insoluble solids using filter paper, water and a range of kitchen based solids.
'Ground pepper is an insoluble solid because it does not dissolve in water.' - Nashwan, Larch
We also explored the journey of filtration when used to produce clean water.
The children learned that 80% of the world's population have access to clean water which means that the 20% that do not are exposed to harmful unsafe water that can result in diseases and loss of life.
We looked at how scientists gleaned from nature and noticed that some elements in nature such as sand, gravel, moss and even crushed charcoal can act as a purifier as it prevents larger particles from passing through.
Our year 5's tested this further by making their own filter using a plastic bottle (safely wrapped in masking tape), cotton wool, sand and gravel.
'The water was not as dirty as I thought it would be after going through the gravel and sand. It has a yellowish colour to it though.' - Sultan, Larch
We concluded that this would be one stage of filtering water but further processing would need to take place to make it drinking water.
Our scientist had plenty of fun whilst learning which is always a joy to see!

The train strikes could not stop us this week from finally visiting the Imperial War Museum.
This trip truly cemented our learning journey this half term as we have been learning in about World War 2 in History with the curriculum link in Literacy.
