🌟 Exploring Shared Values: Our Ethical Journey

This week, our classes looked at how shared values like honesty, kindness, and integrity guide people in their daily lives. We used Islamic teachings to see how different beliefs provide a "roadmap" for doing the right thing.

Learning Together

The children explored three main sources of guidance: wise words (Qur’an), helpful sayings (Hadith), and good examples (Sunnah). We then linked these to universal goals that everyone can appreciate:

• Being kind to our families.

• Keeping our promises.

• Helping those in need.

Bringing Values to Life

To finish, the children worked in groups to perform "Freeze-Frame" scenes. They acted out tricky situations - like deciding whether to tell the truth - and used their "narrator" to explain how following these positive values leads to the best outcome.

It was a fantastic session that showed how, no matter our backgrounds, we can all work together to build a kinder community!

Year 5 Remarkable RE

This week in Year 5 we had looked at Religious Rituals in RE. In particular we had looked at Christianity and the ritual of baptism, although we did get to discuss some other rituals we have all experienced from different religions. An example of this was Zakat (The second pillar of Islam) and how there is the ritual of giving for charity. We had also looked into what the bible say's about baptism and how Christians use this as a source of wisdom and a teaching code for living. 

We had used Reflectiveness in making links back to previous learning and our Reciprocity value for sharing our own experiences of rituals we may have seen such as weddings, funerals and christenings.

East London Muslim Centre trip

Willow had a fantastic day visiting the East London Muslim Centre. The day started with a tour of prayer hall where our tour guide identified the key features of the Mosque including the where the Imam stands and the Qur'an.

Following this, we looked around the washrooms where Muslim people come to carry out ritual washing before prayer. The tour guide explained the importance of charity in Islam, highlighting that all Muslims are encouraged to give 2.5% of their savings to charitable causes.

After this, we looked at the bee hives that the Mosque keeps in order to produce honey and raise money for the centre's many outreach programmes. The East London Muslim Centre holds three schools, very large prayer halls, a business wing and a counselling service.

The trip ended with watching an informational video about the Five Pillars which underpin Islam.

Year 5- Willow Class- East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre Trip

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are delighted to inform you that a trip has been booked for our Year 5 children. The trip will be furthering the children’s study of Islam within our Religious Education Curriculum. 

The Year 5 Willow class children will be visiting the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre on Wednesday 30th October 2019. All children should be in school by 8:30am as we will be leaving at 8:40am. We expect to arrive back at school for 3:00pm. The children will be travelling via public transport and will be accompanied by teachers and support staff from the school. Should there be any delays to our journey that would result in us being back at school later, we will of course inform you via our school Facebook page and Year 5/6 blog.

Should your child require a lunch provided by the school, could you please return the enclosed form no later than Tuesday 29th October 2019 so that we can process your order in time for your child’s trip. Alternatively, children can bring their own packed lunch in a carrier bag that is clearly labelled with their name and class. Please can you ensure that there are no fizzy drinks or sweets. 

This is an exciting opportunity for the children to experience a different culture and the trip will enhance their learning both in school and beyond. We thank you for your continuing support.

Year 5 Islamic Cultural Centre Visit

Year 5 had a fantastic time on their trip today and consolidated their knowledge of Islam through experiencing a place of worship first hand. The highlight for most of the children was being allowed to step inside the magnificent, intricate prayer hall which featured a huge dome with carved patterns and Arabic script on it. 

Iasha, 10 today, said, "I learnt more about the history of Islam and new vocabulary; my favourite part was the call to prayer which blasted through the speakers so everyone knew it was time to come together in the hall." 

On the way home, we stopped off at the children's playground in Regents Park so the children could have a runaround. They loved the adventure frame which allowed them to climb and slide down!

Year 5 Random Acts Of Kindness

Our lovely Year 5s teamed up with Reverend Rich to perform some random acts of kindness today. Maple travelled to Hilldene Shops to hand out sweets to passers by, all in the name of being kind. Year 5 will also be thinking about how to be kind around school and at home and the sense of happiness it gives to everyone involved. 

Jaseem shares

In Year 5, we are learning about the Islamic religion and spent yesterday finding out about the Five Pillars of Islam. Today Jaseem brought in a prayer mat and cap and a study book and explained their significance to the other children, who listened and asked interesting questions. Thank you for sharing Jaseem!

How do people express their faith through the arts?

In Year 6, we have been learning about Islamic art. Calligraphy is the most highly regarded and very important element of Islamic art. Calligraphy means beautiful writing.  In class we have been writing the name of an important person in our lives with artistic flair and creating geometric designs for the borders.
