Year 6 Weekly Round Up 

It has been another busy and productive week in Year 6!

Literacy

In Literacy, the children have completed a diary entry written from the point of view of Stanley Yelnats from Holes. They have worked hard to explore Stanley’s experiences in the desert, describing the physical exhaustion of digging holes day after day, as well as the emotional stress and challenges he faces. The children have focused on using descriptive language and showing Stanley’s thoughts and feelings to bring their writing to life.

Maths

In Maths, we have completed our Place Value unit. The children have developed their understanding of larger numbers, powers of 10 and negative numbers, building their confidence when working with numbers beyond the positive number line.

We also completed our first ever SATs paper as a mock! This was a great opportunity for the children to experience what a SATs paper will feel like and to begin developing the skills and confidence they will need when the real assessments take place next year.

Science

This week in Science, Year 6 have been learning about the function of the heart as part of our unit on The Circulatory System. They created models in groups, focusing on the one way system of blood pumping out of the heart. Over the next few weeks, we will look at the function of blood and blood vessels.

DIY & Life Skills

This half term, we have also begun our exciting DIY (Life Skills) programme, designed to help the children develop practical skills that they can use in everyday life. Over the coming weeks, the children will learn how to tie a tie, read a bus timetable, sew on a loose button, make a delicious granola bowl and fold clothes. These are valuable skills that will help build independence, confidence and responsibility as the children prepare for the next stage of their journey.

Looking Ahead to Secondary School

This week, we were also excited to welcome visitors from two secondary schools. As our Year 6 children begin to think about their transition to secondary school this time next year, these visits provided an excellent opportunity to start thinking about the exciting changes ahead. It was lovely to see the children engaging with the visitors and beginning to consider what their next chapter might look like.

What's coming up?

Over the next few weeks in Maths, we will be revisiting the children's methods within the four operations, within this we will look at common factors, common multiples, prime, cube and square numbers, short division and BIDMAS (BODMAS).
