OPAL 31.3.23

OPAL- Outdoor Play and Learning

Wheeled Toys

We are so lucky with our grounds at Broadford. As the playground is so big we are able to have a whole section just for out wheeled toys.

Sometimes we have buggies that we push each other around in.

Sometimes we put our helmets on and ride bikes.

However, one of our favourites is the scooters.

We have strict rules when riding the scooters:

  • only in the wheeled area.
  • take your turn and share with others.
  • look where you are going and watch out for others.

We all follow these rules carefully to ensure it is fun and safe for everyone.

"The new scooters are so cool." Noah - Cherry

As always we would appreciate any more resources you could add to our collection. So, do think of us if you are having a clear out. The items we are looking for will enable us to enjoy a wider range of play experiences during playtime (see below for some examples):

  • Bread crates
  • Cable drums
  • Metal/plastic pots and pans
  • Range of plastic utensils.
  • Guttering
  • Dressing up clothes
  • Blankets (to add to our den building)
  • Small World toys (Dinosaurs, cars etc..)
  • Scooters
  • Deck chairs/ camping chairs (all sizes)
  • Outdoor cushions

Please take any donations to the school office.

Around the World in a Term Graduate

The last 10 weeks in Around the World have been absolutely fantastic. All the adults have had such fun travelling through all the countries with the children.

On Wednesday, the pupils graduated and shared their new learning with parents/carers. During the session they showed photos of themselves enjoying all the new activities.

These activities included:

  • aboriginal art
  • making Chinese dragons
  • decorating Alaskan totem poles
  • building the Great Pyramids of Giza (Egypt)
  • creating masks for the Carnival of Brazil
  • researching wildlife found in Africa
  • learning the national anthem of the U.S. A
  • making and taste testing Italian wrap pizzas
  • having afternoon tea in a traditional British way

It was such a joy to see the children immerse themselves in all the different activities and discuss with them what they had learned from each one.

Well done everybody. Don't forget to continue your travels in whichever way you can.

Chromebook Crew Graduate!

What an amazing 10 weeks it has been; the Chromebook Crew really did impress Miss Estall with their super whizzy skills!

On Wednesday, the pupils graduated and shared their new learning with parents/carers. At the end of the session they then presented their Google slides which demonstrated their skills.

These skills included, but were not limited to:

  • changing font size, colour and alignment
  • inserting images, drawings and tables
  • inserting videos and hyperlinks
  • applying transitions and animations
  • changing themes and backgrounds (including importing new themes from the internet!)
  • creating formulas and transferring collected data into graphs and charts
  • cropping images, adapting outlines and effects
It was brilliant to watch the pupils work so collaboratively which is a huge benefit of the Google apps. Each week they kindly supported each other and taught one another any new skills which really was such a joy to see.

Well done everybody - it is safe to say you can all add 'proficient in various Google apps' to your CV!

Here are some examples of pupil work created in Google sheets. Pupils carried out an investigation to collect data then used the data to create graphs and charts.

Redwood Class Swimming - Wednesday 3rd May

Redwood Class - Year 5 Swimming Lessons

In Year 5 the children will be having swimming lessons at the Central Park Leisure Centre.

Redwood parents/carers, please complete Google Form.

Each class should get roughly 10 sessions each (STC) which will ensure they achieve the Swimming requirements of the national curriculum in KS2 which are to:

- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

- use a range of strokes effectively

- perform a safe self-rescue in different water based situations

From Wednesday 3rd May 2023, Redwood will be attending swimming lessons. The children will leave school in the afternoon, accompanied by Year 5 staff, and we will make our way to Central Park Leisure Centre on foot. We will return to school by approximately 3.25/3.30pm and children will be leaving from the front of the school by the office.

A reminder of what your child will need:

  • Swimming costume or swimming trunks (no bikinis please!)

  • A towel

  • A named bag to carry and store their items in

  • A swimming hat

  • Goggles (not essential, but can be worn if preferred)

Children should come to school in their uniform and will get changed when we arrive at Central Park Leisure Centre. Please note, no aerosols or powders should be given to children, as these can cause problems for children with asthma.

All children, regardless of ability, will be taking part in swimming lessons as they are a National Curriculum requirement. Children will only be exempt from lessons with a signed and dated doctor’s note or certificate.

If you have any questions or queries about this or any other swimming related issue, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Year 5 team via year5@broadford.havering.sch.uk.

Year 5 Literacy

In Literacy, Year 5 looked at the roles of the ARP (Air Raid Precautions)  including what the role involved and whether it was an easy or difficult role. Then, the classes used the drama technique of 'hotseating' to explore the feelings, events and roles of the ARP. The responses were fantastic and very expressive!

"I thought it was a difficult role because you had to choose which patient to save first."
                                                                       Nevaeh, Maple

“I think the most challenging part of being an air raid warden would be having to extinguish the bombs when they could go off at any time.” Thomas, Willow

"I don't think I could be the last one in a safe place. Imagine the pressure of having to make sure everyone else is safe before you" - Maggie, Redwood

University of Broadford - Get Fit Fridays

University of Broadford - Get Fit Fridays.

This year in our University of Broadford course we have been doing Get Fit Fridays. We have been training hard to get our bodies fitter, healthier and stronger. We discussed and tried to measure our resting heart rate before each session to see if there were any changes.

First of all, we were given basic exercises with little equipment and we worked our way round in a circuit trying our best to do as much as possible. We were in pairs and showed reciprocity by helping one another. We then began adding in more equipment and were allowed to move around the exercises based on what we wanted to try and do. These included javelins, hurdles, weights, speed bounces, tennis rackets and much more!

After this, we designed our own workout with ten exercises that we were planning on teaching to our peers. We had to plan and prepare the equipment used and how we would explain it to others.

After rehearsing in smaller groups, we each then had a go at teaching the whole group of children our exercises. For some of us it was quite challenging but some of us enjoyed it and found it exciting!

We are so proud of this year's Get Fit Fridays graduates!
