Year 5 and their Terrific Trolls

 

This week, Year 5 had the opportunity to travel to Dagenham Vue cinema in order to watch the film Trolls 3.

We all enjoyed the film and the independence and experience of walking into the cinema, finding our seats,

enjoying our snacks and simply sitting back to take in the film.

We managed to make links to our narrative in Literacy and discussed the mountain on the way back.

The morning involved using two of our 4 R’s, these being resilience with the journey and ensuring we completed

a slightly longer route safely.

We also used our reflectiveness when considering our behaviour in the cinema and how we considered

ties to our current learning.

World War Two Workshop in Year 5

 World War Two Workshop in Year 5

On Monday, Year 5 took part in a World War Two workshop which focused on the ARP (Air Raid Precautions). They started their day with a talk from Danny (the air raid warden) who told them about the lives of people during WW2, particularly within an air raid. Year 5 listened to air raid sirens and heard the various sounds people would have heard whilst in their shelters. The children demonstrated their resilience during this time and reflected on the lives of those involved in WW2. Danny also told them about the different types of bombs that were used. 

The children then took part in four other activities including: 

• ARP -The children were split into three groups and each had a goal. They were putting out 'fires' using manual pumps, carrying sandbags over to smother bombs and practicing using a hoe and shovel to safely deposit a bomb away from them. The children showed wonderful reciprocity when working together during these tasks. 
• Artefact investigation - Year 5 were able to look at real artefacts from World War 2 including: ration books, toys, gas masks, identity cards and much more. Each group had a series of questions to answer using the artefacts and were extremely resourceful within the session. 
• First Aid Activity -
• Timeline -  As a year group, Danny discussed the timeline of events of World War 2 to give us a better understanding of how it began and who was involved.

Year 5 Chinese Dragon Dance Workshop

 

On Monday, the children in Year 5 were given a fantastic opportunity to take part in a Chinese Dragon Dance Workshop in school.

After a quick warm up, the children were introduced to a Chinese dance that they had to learn for their final performance! 

Once they had mastered their dancing skills it was time to introduce the props! They were able to work with fans, paper umbrellas and a giant dragon.

The children had to use their resilience and reciprocity skills to work together in pairs, a small group and then a class.

Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps Year 6 - 25/09/19

Year 6 had the fantastic experience of marching with Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps today! 

Year 6 Royal Courts of Justice

To celebrate the children's effort in their Theatre of Law project, we visited the Royal Courts of Justice in London to perform our mock trials in a real court room. The pupils were shown around these active courts and were able to see the list of the different cases which were to be tried that day. Unfortunately, it is illegal to take photos inside the building but we did get a few outside!  

This archaic building was built in the 1870s and was opened by Queen Victoria in 1882. Since then, thousands of cases have been heard here and countless lawyers and barristers have passed through the doors. Most of the cases at the Royal Courts of Justice are civil ones- which could involve a plaintiff suing a business or individual.

The children were blown away by the intricate architecture of the RCJ and the old court rooms which are still in use today. We were also lucky enough to be visited by Judge Hugh Howard- who is the regional Tribunal judge specialising in welfare benefits. He encouraged all the children to consider a career in law and informed us that shockingly only 28% of court judges are women. This figure rises to 45% for tribunal judges which is more representative of the demographic they serve.

Taking part in a mock trial in a real courtroom was a unique experience that I didn't think was possible. We learnt about mitigating and litigating circumstances and the roles of jurors, judges and counsel.

As a result of these trips and our Theatre of Law project, more than two thirds of our year group are now considering a career in law whereas before only 20% knew and understood what a lawyer does.

Larch make pizza!

Yesterday afternoon Larch class visited Pizza Express in Upminster to create their very own pizza. The children learnt all about the ingredients used to make the dough and toppings and the different places they come from. As our topic is Italy this half term, this was a wonderful opportunity to immerse the children into this wonderful country. 

I loved making my pizza. It was so delicious but I want to save some for my family.

Year 6 Make Pizza

On Tuesday, Year 6 were given a special tutorial on making calzone by Mr Borrell. The pupils got stuck in with a variety of fresh ingredients and learnt how to create this delicious Italian dish from scratch. They firstly kneaded the dough and then selected which fillings they wanted to use. Using Mr Borrell's special stone-baking pizza oven, the children then cooked their pizzas to perfection. Thank you Mr Borrell for sparing us your time and skill to make pizza!

I tried mushrooms for the first time and I loved them! Making calzone has encouraged me to try new things!

Year 5 and 6 LSO Trip

We believe in providing opportunities for pupils that widens their experiences.   Year 6 pupils were fortunate enough to be invited to an interactive interpretation of 'The Firebird' by the London Symphony Orchestra at The Barbican Centre in London.

Classical music and musicians may not play a heavy part in an average day for a 10/11 year old, so it was fascinating to see their amazement at the variety of instruments, the intricate conducting and the impressive collaboration the musicians demonstrated.

My favourite instrument was the harp because it sounded so magical and calming.

We listened to the orchestra and observed how they changed pitch and tempo as well as participated in using hand signals to complement the mood of the music. We also sang 'The Deal' which we have been learning in class!

To finish off a brilliant day, on the way home, the children made the school proud by helping someone in need by carrying shopping up the stairs at Gidea Park. Well done!
