Time-Travel to Athens: Year 6’s Greek Adventure

Today, Year 6 began their brand-new topic for this half-term: Ancient Greece.

The children were excited to step back in time and start discovering one of the most influential civilizations in history. Over the coming weeks, they will explore Greek culture, religion, art and architecture, theatre, and of course, the origins of the Olympic Games.

This first lesson sparked their curiosity and set the stage for an exciting journey. The classes are already buzzing with questions and ideas, ready to dive deeper into this fascinating period of history.

Terrific Tudors in Year 6

 

In History this term, we are looking at the Tudors. 

The children started their new unit by looking at their enquiry question 'What was society and culture like during the rule of the Tudors?' and discussing ways we could find the answer to this question.

The children began by working in groups, using their reciprocity skills, looking at different images of Tudor architecture, parliament and theatres. The children discussed what they knew from looking at the images, if they recognised anything from previous periods that we have studied and what is different about other periods we have looked at. The children made great inferences from the images and shared previous knowledge they had about the Tudors.

They then went on to look at Henry VII and Henry VIII and when they reigned and concluded the lesson by using what they already knew about Ancient Greece and the Kingdom of Benin to make predictions about what they think life was like during the period of the Tudors.

A Very Victorian Experience in Year 5

This week, Year 5 took a step back in time to experience life as a Victorian child. They explored popular toys from the Victorian era and even participated in an archaeological dig. The highlight of the day was when the children took part in a ‘Victorian Classroom’ experience, where the workshop leader, fully in character, played the role of a strict Victorian teacher.

History in Year 6

 For this half term the children will be learning about the Kingdom of Benin. The children began their topic by making predictions and comparing this to other areas of history they have learnt about.  

In our hook lesson, we discussed varying different vocabulary that we will encounter during our History lessons. We then had a look at some pictures of artefacts from the Benin period - some of the children had questions but some made statements about what they thought onto a post it note.

All children showed both reciprocity and resilience while working in small groups. They took it in turns to discuss the different artefacts and listenend to each others opinions.

Year 6 Visit The British Museum

British Museum

On Friday, Year 6 visited the British Museum. We used our maps to locate the rooms with Greek artefacts and completed activity sheets for each of the rooms. We linked our learning from our History lessons to identify some of the artefacts and analyse what they were used for.

This half term in Year 5, we have been learning about World War II. We had started with a trip to Hornchurch Country Park and had learned about what had caused World War II. We were surprised by how this had started due to a build up of causes. We will end up on our journey discussing how the war (which had finished in 1945) still impacts our daily lives today.

Year 5 Visit Hornchurch Country Park

Year 5 Visit Hornchurch Country Park

Yesterday, Year 5 went on their school trip to Hornchurch Country Park. We are currently learning about World War 2 and this park played a vital role in defence during the war. Luckily for us, there are still  multiple pillboxes, turrets and other structures remaining from the war. We were able to immerse ourselves in the history of our local area and were reflecting on what life would have been like for those who lived during that period of time.  

We are so excited to continue learning about World War Two throughout the rest of this term!

 Year 5 Hornchurch Country Park Trip - Thursday 11th January 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

On Thursday 11th January 2024, Year 5 will be going on a visit to Hornchurch Country Park. The trip will link to our topic of WW2 in History and therefore will help the children put their learning into context.

Please complete the form here. 

The children need to arrive promptly at school at 8.30am. We will be getting a bus so would like to set off as early as possible in order to maximise our time there. We plan to arrive back at school at 3pm however this is subject to the circumstances on the day and parents will be informed via Facebook/Squid if anything changes.

Children are required to wear their school uniform on the day of the trip. We will be getting the bus however the day will involve lots of walking therefore we suggest children wear trainers (or other comfortable shoes) and weather appropriate clothing as our day will be spent outside. If the weather means our trip cannot go ahead, it will be postponed to the following term. 

We will be having lunch out therefore your child will need a back lunch, unless required from school, and a bottle of water. If your child requires a packed lunch from school, please complete the online form or visit the office.

Year 5 Get Very Victorian

This week, Year 5 have immersed themselves in their new topic (the Victorian Era). They started reading their new class book ‘Street Child’ by Berlie Doherty and began researching the life of children who were unfortunate enough to live in workhouses during the Victorian era. The Year 5 children were extremely reflective and compared the lives of children back then to children now. On Tuesday , children were invited to try some gruel!

Later on in the week, Year 5 visited the Ragged School Museum in London. Children were invited to dress up as a Victorian as they spent the day experiencing life as a child back then. They showed impressive resilience as they took part in a Victorian lesson.

Year 5 Ragged School Museum Trip - 1/2.11.23

Dear Parents/ Carers,

On Wednesday 1st November 2023, Almond class will be visiting the Ragged School Museum in London.

On Thursday 2nd November 2023, Oak and Lime class will be visiting the Ragged School Museum in London.

We kindly ask for an optional contribution of £5.40, which can be paid on Squid. Unfortunately, the trip will not be able to go ahead if we do not have enough contributions.

During the second half term, we will be learning about the Victorian Era so we will be using the trip to excite the pupils. The children will experience a day in the life of a Victorian child therefore your child is invited to dress up as one for the trip! but ensuring that they are wearing appropriate and comfortable shoes as we will be doing a lot of walking. Please ensure that they are wearing appropriate and comfortable shoes as we will be doing a lot of walking.

We will be travelling there by bus and train.

We will be leaving school at 8.45am so please make sure your child is at school at 8.30am. We should arrive back at school by the usual time of 3.15pm however, if there are any changes, we will update parents/ carers on the school Facebook page.

Year 5 Visit Romford Market

 Year 5 Visit Romford Market 

Today, Year 5 had another successful school trip to Romford Market. This term we have been completing a local area study about Romford's history and how various events have impacted the daily lives of people living there today. 

The children walked around the market and compared it to pictures and drawings they had seen of the market when it was originally created in 1247 and since then. They used excellent reflective skills.

In addition to visiting the market, Year 5 also visited a bank as part of their Broadford experiences. They learnt where you had to go to pay money in and how you use the machines.
