A Week of Big Ideas, Busy Brains and Brilliant Learning!
What a week it has been in Year 6! Our pupils have been busy thinking, discussing, reasoning, creating and challenging themselves across the curriculum. There has been lots of fantastic learning taking place, and we are delighted with the enthusiasm and maturity the children continue to show.
Literacy – Building a Balanced Argument
In Literacy this week, we began share writing our balanced arguments. Before we started writing, we prepared facts and opinions for both sides of our chosen topics and discussed these together as a class. This helped us to consider different viewpoints and understand how an argument can be presented fairly.
Maths – Thinking Like Mathematicians
In Maths, we have been consolidating our arithmetic skills. We looked back through examples of calculations and discussed the different methods we have learned, explaining not only what we were doing but why the methods worked.
We also completed our first Year 6 reasoning paper. This gave us the opportunity to apply our mathematical knowledge to a range of different problems and demonstrate how well we can explain our mathematical thinking. We will be sharing the results with you at Parents Evening.
We have also begun our work on the four operations, building on our existing knowledge and developing our confidence when working with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Science – Inside Our Blood
In Science, we continued our learning about the human circulatory system. This week, we looked more closely at the copmposition of blood and explored the different functions of its components within the human body.
The children have been developing their scientific vocabulary and understanding as they discover how the different parts of our circulatory system work together to keep our bodies healthy and functioning.
PSHE – Learning Through Drama
Our drama workshops with The Habit Factory, linked to our PSHE learning, have continued this week and are proving to be a real highlight for the children.
Through drama, discussion and teamwork, the pupils have been exploring important ideas and developing their confidence. It has been fantastic to see them getting involved, sharing their thoughts and supporting one another during the sessions.
ART - Exploring Artists
In Art we explored the artist Lubaina Hamid and discussed the purpose of her art plus we tried some of her techniques ourselves.
Another busy week comes to an end, and there is certainly lots for Year 6 to be proud of. Whether they have been constructing a thoughtful argument, tackling a challenging maths problem, exploring the science of blood or developing their confidence through drama, our pupils have continued to show curiosity, resilience and a real commitment to their learning.

What's coming up?
Over the next few weeks in Maths, we will be revisiting the children's methods within the four operations, within this we will look at common factors, common multiples, prime, cube and square numbers, short division and BIDMAS (BODMAS).
