Year 5 Viking Day

Today year 5 are extremely lucky to be visited by Erik Erikkson, who has come to help us learn about our history topic- the Vikings. Erik has brought along many artefacts and objects for us to explore and is already imparting his vast knowledge of the Vikings onto the children!

Elm's Star Writer

This week our star writer in Elm class is Sian Burnett, who wrote an informative biography about Usain Bolt. Sian wrote chronologically and included suitable openers to make her writing a pleasure to read. Well done Sian! 

Year 5's temporary pet

Miss Munday has kindly lent Cinderella, an African snail, to Year 5 this week. The children of Elm were so excited to welcome her into our classroom. Cinderella enjoys munching on lettuce and cucumber and slithering around in her muddy wonderland. She thrives on human contact and likes having baths. Cinderella is a good way for the children to see how pets should be cared for and treated and she makes a wonderful addition to our year group!

Holly's home science

This weekend, Holly Chilvers was busy at home making salt crystals. Holly had to carefully monitor her experiment to ensure the crystals were forming correctly and is now a certified scientist. Well done Holly!

Year 5 spellings

Here are the spellings for this week. The spelling test will be on Friday as normal. Please encourage your child to look up definitions of the words as some are trickier than expected (eg. hangar). A reminder that children are expected to bring in their spelling book and reading record to school every Friday. 

Year 5 human place value

This morning, children in Miss Chau's math set ventured outside to complete human place value sums by physically moving members of their team. The sums got tricky with children having to work out whether numbers were getting bigger or smaller and what the value of each digit was. All children got the chance to direct their group and test their hand at leadership.

Year 5 Parents: Reminder

Please can all parents of Year 5 children be aware that swimming lessons will commence again on Monday, 5th January 2015. All children will need to have their appropriate swimming kit: swim suit, towel and swimming hat.
