Year 6 Spellings 6th-10th November

Below are the Year 6 Spellings for this week. The weekly test will be on a Friday and children should hand their books in on this day too.   Pupils are expected to practice their spellings for 15 minutes per day as well as practice their times tables and read at home. Children are encouraged to search for the definitions of the words and use them in sentences in order to gain merits for their tracker. 

Willow Class Star Writer

Our star writer this week is the lovely Brooke Atkinson. In literacy this week, we studied the status of our main character Billy in the story 'Bling!' We then considered the language the author had chosen to show his status. In the beggining of our story, Billy perceived himself as a loser, his only constant companion being Goji his cat. However, after gaining the power of turning anything to gold, he strolled into school as cool as a cucumber, oozing with superiority.

The children's task was to take an extract from the story, where Billy had a high status, and alter it so that Billy was deemed a playground worm. Broke did so successfully, changing her sentence openers, carefully selecting adjectives and verbs and adding accents with dialogue. Superb work Brooke, keep it up! 

Year 5 Reading Morning

Tomorrow morning (9.00-10.00) is very exciting for us, as all year 5 parents and carers are invited to Broadford for a reading morning. This will not only include ways to support children in their reading and comprehension, show how to use the very handy mybookblog, but will also include a raffle for all that attend!

Today, year 5 have created some posters in class to present to their adults at home. If your child hasn't shown you their poster, make sure you ask them for it! Below is the children in the process of their poster making...

'Just Joshing' Anti-Bullying Production

Today, Years 2-6 were visited by Firehorse productions, who put on a spectacular anti-bullying performance with a very important message. A young girl named Josh was unfortunately experiencing a case of bullying at school from former friends Jack and Dotty. Josh showed how she dealt with the bullying and explained how it had impacted her, from her school work to her general happiness. She reiterated that although the phrase 'sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me' exists, quite often words can be extremely hurtful.

The whole audience empathised with poor Josh and quickly formed a dislike for the bully in the performance, Jack. In Broadford school we pride ourselves on being 'kind and polite' to everyone we meet and the show reminded us of the importance of this value.

Courtney Simpson remarked on how the performance made her sad as she dread to think that a person would be made to feel the way that Josh did. A very thoughtful comment Courtney.  

Larch make pizza!

Yesterday afternoon Larch class visited Pizza Express in Upminster to create their very own pizza. The children learnt all about the ingredients used to make the dough and toppings and the different places they come from. As our topic is Italy this half term, this was a wonderful opportunity to immerse the children into this wonderful country. 

I loved making my pizza. It was so delicious but I want to save some for my family.
