Palm class at the Royal Courts of Justice

Finally, after weeks of hard work, Palm went on the trip to the a Royal Courts of Justice. Entering the magnificent building we were met with security. We knew from here what a serious place this was. It was similar to an airport where you had to walk through metal detectors snd the teachers had to put their bags through the X-ray machines.

We were surprised that the courtroom was quite small compared to what we were expecting, but this was because the courtroom we were in was a civil court, not a criminal court. We found out that Apple and Samsung had an on going trial as Apple sued Samsung fir copying their iPad.

We then got to conduct our trial which we had previously written about Nathaniel. Nathaniel was a real life person who joined a gang and was present when they robbed a newsagents. Although he did threaten the shop keeper, he was present, which meant that he was involved and was arrested for robbery.

The jury found him not guilty. Although afterwards we were told we should listen to the evidence and not go with gut feeling. We were shocked to find that you do not always have to be the actual person to do a crime to be convicted of one!

Later we met a special guest, Alison a Judges clerk. She showed us the beautiful clothes judges wears at ceremonies. We couldn't believe that his clothes were worth £60,000 and his wig £2,000. 

Positions of the Planets from the Sun

In Science, we learnt about the planets in our solar system and interesting facts about the planets too. 

Did you know that Mercury is the smallest planet and closest to the sun? 

Did you know Mars is often called the Red Planet as its surface has lots of iron oxide and makes it look red?

Did you know that Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system and it has over 60 moons?

Did you know that Uranus is know as an ice giant as its surface temperature is -224'C

Next we looked at how far each planet was away from the Sun. We used the scale 1 metre = 150 million kilometres and measured the distances on the field.

Mercury is 60 million kilometres from the Sun which was 0.4 metres.

Venus is 110 million kilometres from the sun which was 0.73 metres.

Earth is 150 million kilometres from the sun which was 1 metre.

Mars is 230 million kilometres from the sun which was 1.53 metres.

Jupiter is 780 million kilometres from the sun which was  5.2 metres.

Saturn is 1400 million kilometres from the sun which was 9.33 metres.

Uranus is 2900 million kilometres from the sun which was 19.33 metres.

Neptune is 4500 million kilometres from the sun which was 30 metres.

The distance was so vast that even on the scaled version on the field we couldn't fit it into one picture.

Elm sharing assembly tomorrow morning

A reminder that tomorrow is Elm's sharing assembly and we look forward to welcoming in parents, carers and family members to hear what we have been learning about!

Balderdash and Fabulous Phrases

To develop their knowledge and use of rare words, Palm class played a Word Power game. The. Children had to write down what they thought was the definition of a word and use it in a sentence. They then checked their definitions using the answer cards and dictionaries. We can't wait to see the powerful words and phrases used in their writing.

Next we played a game of Balderdash. Balderdash is a game of bluffing and trivia. The children were given a rare word and its definitinion. Using a dictionary and their own knowledge, the children then had to write three bluff meanings of their chosen word. Each correct answer earned their team house points.

Stick times tables and outdoor fraction word problems

This morning, children in Miss Chau's maths set practised their times tables outside using the metre log sticks. There were twists as children had to raise the sticks on certain multiples too! The children then worked on deepening their fraction knowledge with multi-step word problems. 

Converting Measures Treasure Hunt

This morning the children have been converting between grams and kilograms and millilitres and litres. Afterwards they completed a converting measures treasure hunt and had to apply their converting skills to complete the task.

Year 5 Spring 2 Learning Challenge

We are delighted to provide you with the Year 5 Learning Challenge for this half of the Spring Term.

You will notice that the activities have now been split into Basic, Advanced and Deep Learning. This is a new way for us to look at learning at Broadford, and is designed to ensure that children not only acquire factual knowledge but also gain a further understanding about how their new skills or knowledge can be applied to their own lives or be used to further their cognitive and social development.  

The theme of the Learning Challenge for the second half of the Spring is Space. It is entirely up to the child whether they select the poem, significant person, music or painting, or a combination of all 4. They can also select the activities that they want to attempt, though we would encourage them to deepen their learning as much as possible.
