Year 6 Learning Challenge Autumn 2

We are delighted to provide you with the Year 6 Learning Challenge for the second half of the Autumn Term.You will notice that the activities are split into Basic, Advanced and Deep Learning. This is a way for us to look at learning at Broadford, and is designed to ensure that children not only acquire factual knowledge but also gain a further understanding about how their new skills or knowledge can be applied to their own lives or be used to further their cognitive and social development.

The theme of the Learning Challenge for the second half of the Autumn term is What can the South American arts teach us?' It is entirely up to the child whether they select the poem, significant person, music or painting, or a combination of all 4. They can also select the activities that they want to attempt, though we would encourage them to deepen their learning as much as possible. 

Significant Person

Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele)

Painting

T'he Persistence of Memory' by Salvador Dali

	Produce a collage of other paintings by the artist
Advanced	Draw a picture in similar style
	Transform the medium of the painting: use collage instead of painting
Deep	Use the image as a stimulus for 100WC
	Describe what the painting: what it represents, how it makes you feel, what it is based on

Music

Basic	Listen to a piece of music
	Identify the instruments.
Advanced	Research the life of the composer.
	Attempt to recreate the piece   of music
Deep	A mind map of different emotions you feel at various points in the piece
	Produce a piece of art/collage based on how the music makes you feel.

Year 6 Spellings: 31st October- 4th November

Below are the Year 6 Spellings for this week.

Students are expected to practice their spellings for 15 minutes per day as well as practice their times tables and read at home. Children are encouraged to search for the definitions of the words and use them in sentences in order to gain merits for their trackers.

Redwood Star Writer

Our star writer this week is Leo Mbata. He wrote a superb newspaper report based on the eventful day in August when four GB athletes won medals in just one astonishing day. Leo managed to hook his reader in by using exciting vocabulary and reporting the amazing feats of Justin Rose, Jason Kenny, Andy Murray and Max Whitlock in an engaging manner. Well done Leo! 

Year 6 Spellings: 17th-21st October

Year 6 Broadford Broadcast!

Today was a fun-packed day of filming and producing after spending a day at the Sky Academy Skills Studio where the Year 6 pupils made their own news report based on encouraging children to be more active.

There were many jobs for the children to do: producing; directing; editing the clips and even controlling the camera! The children were placed into four groups and created their own lifelike report on sports and edited it afterwards. The directors and producers got to dress the reporters ready for the scene and also make the executive decisions regarding the reports. 

Peiyce Egan, of Redwood class, said that she felt like a real reporter after the amazing experience!

Amazingly, the pupils were given a quick tour of the Sky studios and they even saw Jim White studying the headlines in between live broadcasts. It was incredible to see so many people working in sync to create one news report and it just proved how important teamwork is. Temira Hascar, Larch class, explained "We definitely used reciprocity throughout the day and we also saw how adults use it in their daily jobs!"

To finish off the day, the children watched the final edit of the newspaper report and everybody loved it! Year 6 were also given their very own wristband to take home, which included a clever usb connection so that the children are able to show their families and friends. 

86% of the year group are now considering a career in television after today's trip and we are very pleased to see the children aiming high with their career ambitions and aspirations.

Reminder: No Elm swimming today

A reminder: There is no swimming for Elm Class this afternoon as it is the week before half term. Elm Class will be dismissed at 3:15pm. 

Year 6 MyMaths

Today the children were given their individual MyMaths log ins so that they can access tasks and subject area to support their work in lessons. If you have not received this letter from your child, please come and see Miss Chau or Mr Light. Alternatively, email the Year 5/6 mailbox on year56@broadford.havering.sch.uk and we will reply with your child's log in. 

We strongly encourage the children to complete allocated MyMaths tasks at home to support their learning and aid their progression.
