Count On Us: Year 6 Maths Challenge Afternoon

A big thank you to all of the parents that joined us in Year 6 for our maths challenge afternoon. 

Not only did Year 6 do an excellent job of demonstrating the mathematical skills behind tangrams, the 24 game and pentominoes, but they also managed to show fantastic reciprocity in their learning behaviours too. 

Working with their partners (and some willing parents), the children created some technical shapes and helped eachother to master the challenging calculations for the 24 game.

Year 5 will be hosting their Count on Us mathematical challenge afternoon next Friday afternoon, 27th November 2015 from 2pm. 

Year 5 multiplication tarsia puzzles

Yesterday, the children in Miss Chau's maths set were applying their multiplication knowledge to 3 different levels of tarsia challenge. 

Harry Vincent, Elm, said 'I find the tarsias challenging but fun because we have to work out the answers to each multiplication sum before we can put the puzzle together'. 

Natalie Towner, Elm, added that 'Creating my own tarsia puzzle was enjoyable because I had to think up my own questions as well as checking that the answers were correct'. 

The children demonstrated impressive levels of resourcefulness by developing their reasoning skills by working out answers methodically and they also sought out connections between the different jigsaw pieces. 

Anti-Bullying Workshop

Last Tuesday, Year 6 took part in the Freshwater Theatre Company Anti-Bullying Workshop. The children started on a quest about what bullying is and the different types of verbal, physical and emotional bullying. The children worked through different role plays and situations and how to respond to a situation.

'Wonderland' performed by The London Symphony Orchestra

We believe in providing opportunities for pupils that widens their experiences.   Year 5 pupils were fortunate enough to be invited to a magical interpretation of 'Wonderland' by the LSO at The Barbican Centre in London.

Classical music and musicians may not play a heavy part in an average day for a 9 year old, so it was fascinating to see their amazement at how lots of people, playing 'lots of different instruments could make such an awesome sound!' Athenkosi, Maple

"The sound of a celesta is magical!  In 'Sugar Plum Fairy' and the Harry Potter piece you could really feel the magic because of the celesta."  Ruby, Maple 

Year 5 Spellings

Here are the spellings for this week. The spelling test will be on Friday every week. Please encourage your child to look up definitions of the words as some are trickier than expected. A reminder that children are expected to bring in their spelling book and reading record to school every Friday.

Remembrance in Acer... A special thanks

A special thank you to Molly and Simona for sharing work that they prepared at home for Remembrance Day. Molly bought in a balloon poppy (it received many compliments throughout the week) that she created after visiting the British Legion. Simona - after reading 'In Flanders Fields' in class- was inspired to create a beautiful piece of artwork at home.
