Fraction Fun in Year 5

For the past several weeks, students have been learning about fractions in Miss Corrales' maths class. Students have discussed why fractions are important in our everyday lives and which jobs use fractions as a life skill. For example, chefs use fractions to measure ingredients, our parents/guardians use fractions when driving to measure distances, tailors use fractions to measure clothing, and architects use fractions to measure and construct buildings. What other jobs can you think of that uses fractions?

Students practiced calculating equivalent fractions by investigating the ways to find the lowest common multiples in order to find lowest common denominators. The next challenge was to reduce fractions into its simplified form.

The year 5 students pieced together an equivalent fraction tarsia puzzle that involved a lot of team work, and calculations!

Students have practiced adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. They learned how to calculate and make denominators for each fraction the same before finding the solutions.

Try this out:
Miss Corrales ate four sixths of a pizza and later ate seven twelfths. How much pizza did she eat in total?

We are currently working on converting mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa.
