Here at Broadford, we have been loving
studying Black History Month this October. This year we have been looking at
all things CARNIVAL!
The children have learnt about the
times of slavery and how the black community would organise special masquerade balls
to celebrate the ending of lent.
These
previous black slaves took their knowledge of the masquerade balls and
redeveloped the celebration by introducing aspects of their culture, for
example, the music, food and costumes in order to celebrate freedom and
equality. This began in Trinidad and Tobago and was the beginning of carnival.
This celebration was to encourage
everybody from different backgrounds and ethnicities to come together to
celebrate life together.
The black community wanted everyone to
feel as one big family and everyone to love one another for their differences.
On Wednesday 20th
October, Broadford will be holding our very own Carnival conga line
through the school where the children can showcase their carnival decorations.
On this day the children are invited to
come to school in non-uniform, they can
wear anything bright and colourful to celebrate this
day.
We can't wait to celebrate with everyone!
