OPAL 9.2.24

 OPAL- Outdoor Play and Learning

Rough & Tumble

The children have now had a few weeks of enjoying the new structure of this activity. It has been so popular that we have had to create a timetable to ensure all the children have an opportunity to the space.

Here is a reminder of the benefits rough and tumble can provide:

Rough play helps children:

  • understand the limits of their strength
  • explore their changing positions in space
  • work out social relationships as they play roles, take turns and sort out personal boundaries
  • burn off energy.

In rough and tumble play, children smile and laugh. You might see excitement and pleasure on their faces. No-one gets hurt or forced to do anything. Once children are finished with rough-and-tumble play, they keep playing together.

If you see frowning, crying, fear or anger, it isn’t play.

The Broadford Rules

  • You can only play rough and tumble on the Year 2 astro turf because this is a safe surface
  • You can only play if Miss Wyatt is on the astro turf
  • You can wrestle, but must not physically punch or kick
  • If a child says stop, you stop
  • If someone cries, frowns or gets angry, you all need to stop
  • Everyone should be having fun
  • Respect each other
  • If rules are not followed, play will stop until another assembly has been held
The children have been incredibly responsible at following the rules so far. We hope this continues and the children are able to enjoy this addition to our OPAL opportunities.

As always we would appreciate any more resources you could add to our collection. So, do think of us if you are having a clear out. The items we are looking for will enable us to enjoy a wider range of play experiences during playtime (see below for some examples):

Metal/plastic pots and pans
Range of plastic utensils.

Dressing up clothes

Please take any donations to the school office.
