WOW Work in Year 6 - Art and Forest School

Art - Identity

This half term in Art, Year 6 pupils have been mastering their drawing techniques whilst focussing on perfecting their portraits. Pupils began by drawing a picture of their family in the style of a 'Blind Contour'. They then moved on to hosting their own 'Portrait Club' whereby they drew portraits of their partner; they spent a lot of time focusing on the key details that define their partner's face.

Pupils are now working on a layered self-portrait using shading to add depth and enhance features. Pupils will be applying their cross hatching technique and will considred features that are dominant on their own face.

Forest School

Today, the children in Redwood made 'Gods Eyes' by weaving coloured wool around two sticks in a cross shape.  The coloured wool made an attractive series of concentric squares around the sticks.  Some children chose rainbow colours, others chose the colours of their favourite football team.

Miss Float has kindly shared what the pupils have been up to this term in Forest School across all three classes.

Autumn Term:
In our first session, the children hunted for, and collected, leaves from around the school site to match the images they were given and then they used clues to identify which plant or tree each leaf came from.

In our second session, the children completed some photographic challenges, for example they had to make a noughts and crosses grid from natural materials and photograph two children in their group playing together using natural materials to represent the nought and the cross.  Another challenge was to make a picture of a woodland creature using natural materials and then take a photograph of it.

In our third session, the children made Christmas cards using decorated stones and other natural materials that they collected, tto represent e.g robins, Santa and reindeer.

Spring Term:
In our first session the children completed the 'Egg Drop Challenge' in groups.  Using a single piece of paper and some sticky tape the children had to make a container to hold an egg.  They then had to find and use suitable natural materials to add protection to the container.  Once the egg was inside and the container sealed, the children dropped the parcel from the top of the stairs near Year 1 and then opened their container to see if their egg had broken, or whether they had successfully added enough protection to keep the egg intact.

In our second session the children made 'Gods Eyes' by weaving coloured wool around two sticks in a cross shape. The coloured wool made an attractive series of concentric squares around the sticks. Some children chose rainbow colours, others chose the colours of their favourite football team.
