Year 5 Fascinating Phases of the Moon

Fascinating Phases of the Moon

Year 5 have been looking at the different phases of the moon this week.

We started with children taking the parts of the Sun , Earth and Moon and discovering how they orbit each other. The children showed fantastic reciprocity while completing these complex moves.

While doing this, we noticed that the Moon orbits the earth but only one face of the moon is ever seen.

The next thing to discover was the light source. Many people believe that the Moon has light, in fact, the light we see from the Moon is actually sunlight being reflected.

Finally, we looked at  how the Moon appears on earth throughout the month.  As the Sun, Earth and Moon change positions the Moon appears to change shape; with each different shape having its own name.

To demonstrate these we used Oreo cookies. We were very resourceful when trying to create each particular phase.

Do you think we managed to represent them well?

“I loved making the different shapes of the moon with Oreos.” Mahdi, Lime

“The waning and waxing phases are just opposite side of the moon that we can see.” - Hashir, Oak

" I have learned that we always see the same side of the moon." Billie, Almond
