Scintilating Science
Year 5 had an amazing day today at the Science Museum. We were lucky enough to have time in the Wonderlab, which is an interactive science laboratory. When we arrived we were so surprised as to how many activities there are to investigate. Each section provided us with challenges that took a lot of resilience and reciprocity to solve.
In the sound section we were able to touch sound and could feel the vibrations being made.
In the matter section we investigated moving mist and making cloud rings. We found out these were made by the gas on the inside moving faster than the gas on the outside. We also tested our photography skills by trying to capture a shot of a water droplet hitting a surface.
In the light section we were reflective when using the heat camera. We found different movements and different parts of our bodies created different thermal images.
"Wow! The wooden slide was so fast but the one with grass didn't work very well." Dominic - Almond
By far the most exciting was the forces section which contained our favourite experiments. We learned that we could lift our own body weight using a pulley system.
We had to be resourcesful when fitting the tubes together to create a run that used gravity to drop the ball to the floor.
Have you ever heard of centripetal force? Today we found out that this is the force that keeps an object moving in a circular path. We got to experience this on the turntable.
Finally, we saved the best till last..... the friction slide. By sliding down each one we realised that the surface material of the slide changed the speed at which we moved. This is due to how mcih resistance each one creates.
