Year 5 problem solve

Miss Chau challenged some year 5 children to make a staircase out of multi-link cubes with 5 steps up and 5 steps down. Children had to work out how many cubes were needed and whether there was a formula they could use and apply to other staircases, such as one with 15 steps up and 15 down. Only 4 children managed to work out a formula and apply it to other staircases. Well done Kye, Simona, Isaac and Samson! Children have now been challenged to work out whether there is a formula for a staircase with 15 up, 16 down and if so, what it is. The formula must work for any staircase!
